Hey all, I'm just now getting into precision rifles after several years of shooting. I've been lurking here for quite awhile and just last week bought my first rifle from forum member chawk off the PX forum. Its a Remington 700 .308 with a Shilen barrel that was built up by AJ Brown. It was a great deal and I'm very pleased with it.

I found a newish Bushnell Elite 3200 5x15x40 scope on gunbroker, bought a Harris bipod, and got ahold of some match ammo. The scope arrived today, was promptly mounted, and off I went to the range.

I took four different loads to the range: FGMM 168gr, FGMM 175gr, BHA 168gr, and BHA 175gr. The rifle liked the FGMM 175gr the best by far.

For some reason it didn't really care for the BHA 175gr.

I also tried the 'dot drill,' but made a shameful showing. I found that I tended to anticipate recoil and that threw the shot off about half the time. Still, shooting is fun.

I think the only upgrades I'll do for the time being will be getting some kind of detachable magazine setup (maybe the HS Precision DBM, as it should drop right into my stock, but I've also been looking at CDI's setup). A USO SN-3 will take the place of the Bushnell someday, but thats a ways down the road.

Thanks for looking. Tell me what you think will help improve things.

You picked a great combo to start with. You can be confident in your gear and that will help your shooting. Practice practice practice!

Practice is the key to getting better in anything

Not bad on the target though!

Thanks for the replies everybody. This is a fun subset of shooting to get into. I haven't gotten into reloading yet (don't have the space!), but it is in the plans eventually.

As for the cat, I think he was trying to figure out why I was paying attention to something other than him!

Nice rifle, nice shooting.

Your flinch will go away after time. If you get the rifle jammed into your shoulder and you load the bipod recoil isnt nearly as bad. When I started pushing into the rifle I stopped thinking about recoil.

The rifle should serve you well from the looks of things. The main thing now is plenty of "trigger time". Shoot as much & as often as you can. As time, money & space allows, start working some handloads up and watch her tighten down.

Keep it up my friend & welcome aboard!

Looks like you are off to an excellent start. It helps to have someone who knows what they are doing watch you, or best case take a PR class, so you get good habits engrained from the start.

Rifles don't shoot/group all ammo the same, so your variances are a given. Find the factory ammo it likes best and stick with it, or develop a hand load for it, that works consistently in various temps.

Those targets look familiar.... have you seen our latest offerings? (almost 300 free targets are now on the website)

Congrats on the new stick.

Lol, yeah, I've definately been to your site and downloaded two of your three offerings. Thanks so much! They are great.

Nice stick!

X2 on the words of wisdom above.

Another good piece of hardware is a snap cap.... buy one practice dry firing with correct technique and watch the improvements.Might even get rid of the flinching aka "pre ignition push"

For anticipating the recoil. Make yourself a Dummy round.

I would take 5 loaded and the one dummy round and mix them in my hand and then while I was laying next to my rifle I would drop them next to it. I would then without looking pick one and load. I would do this until I found the dummy round and as soon as I did I would mix it in with what I had left of the original 5 until all I had was the dummy round. I then repeted the process with five fresh rounds.

Thanks for the advice everybody. It will probably be another week before I can make it out again, but I'm really looking forward to it when I do.
