Night Vision New to Snipers Hide-Night vision monocle

Re: New to Snipers Hide-Night vision monocle

PVS-14 would definitely be the best bet. depending on your budget and the distance you are looking to reach out to there are quite a few different options from different manufacturers and different style intensiifer tubes. If you like, give me a call, I can fill more in for you and if you like quote you on prices. Hide members get 5% off the top automatically.

Have you looked at the Laser Genetics ND3 50mm long distance laser designator? Run you about $499. has a range out to 800 yards.

Might be an option.

Decide on your budget and how good a unit you want. I will say that night vision has been my favorite purchase in the last 10 years with a class III machine gun being second. So I definitely think they are a great toy to invest in.

At the top of the food chain is the PVS-14, which run $3500 for a new unit. These are extremely flexible in their use (helmet mounted, hand held, weapon mounted, etc.). It comes with a 1x lens, but you can get 3x (for $150-200), 5x ($750 on up) or even high power if you want to do star gazing. You can find them used for $2500, but you really need to do your research to make sure you know what you are getting. Not all PVS-14 are equal. Some are merely PVS-14 housing with other gen 3 tubes stuck in it (without the autogated or adjustable gain). While they may not be bad units, they are slightly misleading in the sense that they are not a 'full-featured' PVS-14.

There are various gen 3 commercial units out there as well. Every thing from a low end ITT 160 monocular to a Litton M945. The prices and performance of each are all over the table. Most are used, so that complicates things as well. There are also the various bi-oculars & goggles. You can find PVS-7 with just about any generation tube in it, both foreign or US made. ITT has the 260 which are a low end entry unit.

If you have a lower budget, there is the gen 2 stuff as well. Everything from PVS-5 dual tube mil-surplus units to new commercial D300 monoculars. There are some real bargains for used, older monoculars. Others ask crazy prices for very old units. But again, you have to do your research to know when you are getting into and realize the risk of getting an older, used unit. Not all units are equal (even on the same model) and there are alot of lemons out there. While not everything on Ebay has problems, everything with problems is on Ebay. So it is definitely buyer beware when picking up a used unit on Ebay.

With the warning above stated. I have only bought used NV units. I have been pretty lucky as only one was a real lemon (PVS-5 tube with a burnt power supply), but I was able to sell it off for parts and get most of my money back. I have found some real gems (PVS-7 sold to me with a gen 2+ tube which turned out to be a pretty nice gen 3 tube). So, I am very pleased with most of what I have, but it did take alot of research and I was gambling with my money. I bid on things on Ebay with the idea that I may only be able to sell it for parts.
