Hey guys I've been lurking here for a few days now and reading tons of posts (lots of good info here). After reading the "Low Budget Trainer" by TP I had the bug...

As of today I am the proud owner of a Savage 93R17 black synthetic stock, bull barrel, w/accutigger. (gave 137.00 for it out the door)

I will try and get a pic up in a day or so. I am compilling a list of things I need for it and so far this is what im looking at.

Centerpoint 4-12 X 40 Illm rect. Mil-Dot
Bipod (want one i can still connect a sing to)

I must say this is a great forum so far.

Congrats on the purchase, you'll find this place to be super helpful, and lacking in all of the flame threads and idiots running rampant.

I got my Winchester bipod at Wally World, was about $40. Connects to the original sling swivel, and has a secondary sling mount built in. Works good.

If you're going to play with your new toy at different ranges, a quick thing comes to mind that I wish I would have done when I bought my setup a couple weeks ago. You get what you pay for with the glass, and target turrets come in handy. I have "tactical" turrets, and my Bushnell Banner was a great deal, but the 1/4 MOA adjustment isn't exactly precise, it's not that clear on high magnification, and the lack of a zero-reset gets on my nerves.

Consider a log book. I haven't set one up yet, but from my experiences it sounds to be pretty useful, and I can see how it'd come in handy.

thanks for the mention, i'm a bit flattered!

these economical rimfire trainers are the cat's ass, i haven't touched my .308 in a while. lot's to learn from them that are easily applied to their "big brothers".

"smallboresniper", another "7 teener" here spent alot of time with his 93, and is a good source of 17hmr info.

Thanks for the welcome TP I have read alot of Smallboresnipers posts as well.
I am ex-army and used to be heavy into shooting and then real life happened, but now that im a little more settled down I am going to get back into it. (not to mention I have 3 boys that are shooting age)
Hence why your low budget trainer posts were very helpful since i have to build 3 rifles... so money will be a issue.
Heck I'll have to wait aleast a payday or two just to get a scope for the 93R17

You may want to order the EGW 20 MOA mount for the Savage 93 before you stick your scope on. It's really nice and not that expensive. Also, I have a Centerpoint 4-16x40 on my Savage MKII .22 that definitely gets the job done scope-wise. I can see how it's not as nice as a Nikon or some of the more expensive scopes, but for $60 at Wal-Mart it can't be beat!

Also, I've heard the Winchester bipods from Wally World are pretty decent for their price. I went ahead and ordered the Harris on Wal-Mart's site and had it shipped site-to-store so I didn't have to pay shipping. Also very nice.

Keep us updated on your build and let us see the finished product and some groups!

$140.00 with the accutrigger, new or used? if new, i'd buy a few more and sell them for $250!

the "sloped" moa base helps alot when shooting out at further distances. due to drop (although not as much with the 17 compared to .22 lr) many scopes run out of adjustment. the base tilts the scope enough to gain adjustment.

Of all the rifles I have shooting .22lr is still some of the most fun, especially greater than 100 yds.

Check out LV Steel Targets for even more fun. I love mine.

what is accurate for a 22 out at about 100 to 175 yards? I know with my rem 597 I can hit a 3" plate at 100 dang near all day long. is that anything worth a crap for a 22? seems really good to me but some people on here seem to imply that 1" groups at 100 is routine with their 22s.

just like anything else, grandpa would think hitting the paper at 100 is a major feat, while many here would say tha 2" is too much.

some other rimfire sites preach how good around an inch at 25 yards is, but i imagine most here would think (and do) that at 50 yards it should be just one large ragety hole about .30 cal size.

around 1.75" to 2" with wind (outside measurement) is "routine" for me at 100 without rear support, with rear support 1.25" to 1.5" is "routine"

but really anything under 2" groups with any rimfire at 100 yards isn't routine, it takes some work each time you squeeze off a shot, especially if there's wind.

a guy like carter mayfield (my hero) can put 'em in there even closer.

depends on ammo and rifle (equipment) too.

that's why i really like seeing the pictures of the targets in the rimfire comps we have here so you can see the groups and the ammo/rifle combinations along with shooting style to get an idea of what's hot and what's not.

Thanks TP I just shoot cheap federal champions with a cheap ass scope and my trigger like all 597s feels like its 8Lb. If I ever get around to getting a good scope and match ammo I'll probably be able to get down to the 2" mark. I thought a bout getting a new 22 but seems as though my 597 is doing pretty good. all things considered.

Best fortune with your new .17 dinger.

I think you'll find that once you've added the .22LR, it will probably get the bulk of your usage.

The simple cast bullet technology of the .22LR lends itself better to the rimfire concept, IMHO. I think the jacketed bullets have benefits, and that they will probably find their best use on small varmints.

What he said. Plus, the 0moa and the 20moa are the same price. Why not have an extra +20moa of adjustment to get out even farther without holding over? I'm always a fan of more for the same price. Also, having a one piece base as opposed to the factory scope mounts seems more stable to me. And finally, the mount looks pretty on my Savage
