New to the forum and starting a new build

Hi everyone. I hope to be detailing out this build complete with photos, but for now I just wanted to share the plans. My goal is to build a tack driver that is both fun to shoot and cheap to shoot. I just placed an order for an XLR tactical chassis and a Krieger 1.25" straight cut 1:11 barrel. Next week I will be placing the order for a Badger M2008 action. I'll finish all this off with a Jewell trigger. I have not decided on optics yet, but I will be looking for something that won't break the bank while still providing good vision out to 600 yards and beyond.

Opinions on optics are welcome!

Yeah, I guess that's an important part of the build. In keeping with the cheap to shoot concept, I went with a .308. That will get me out as far as I have available to shoot in North GA.

My father has a Barrett M82A1 50BMG coming in and I'll use that should I ever get an itch to go longer.

Well for optics an SWFA SS 5-20x50 HD is around 1200 or so for the non-illuminated model and they are quite clear. A lot of guys really like the bushnell HDMR.

I am doing a build quite similar to yours XLR chassis, M2008 action, Huber concepts trigger, bartlein barrel in 6.5 creedmoor I have been looking at a Leupold Mark 8 most recently.

Sooooo, I have slightly deviated from my build. Thanks to this forum, I have decided to switch from an affordable tack driver, to a ridiculously expensive cannon. I just placed an order with Robert at RWS for a 338 SnipeTac repeater barreled action. There goes the neighborhood....

WOW, what starter inexpensive fun to shoot gun build did I miss that mentioned a 338? Nothing like jumping in with both feet. Good luck on the build, start saving for the big expenses after the gun shows up.

Yeah, I usually only like to do things once. I know this gun will put me in the poor house and isn't exactly a starter gun, but hey, I'm the type guy that had a friend drive me off the lot 10 or so years ago after I signed the papers on a new supercharged Cobra when I had no idea how to drive a manual. A decade later, and I haven't owned anything but a stick since. Maybe a bad analogy, but it's just who I am.

I know when I had my 375CT it sat in the safe most of the time. It was very expensive to shoot and a somewhat finicky round. Honestly that class of cartridge really doesn't come into it's own till about a mile.

If you are going to be shooting regular long range distances a smaller cartridge will do almost as well.

I was shooting my 30-375R yesterday with 1st round hits at 1080Y, 1500Y and 1850Y just to give you a example of what a smaller cartridge is capable of.

RWS is a good builder BTW. I'm sure he's got reamers for many cartridges.

Seriously, if you want something that will grow with you, but won't hinder your performance starting out, look at a 6mm or 6.5mm. Either one can get you to a mile and won't beat you up and rob you every time you shoot it. Almost everyone who owns a .338 can't and won't shoot it in a manner that it shows any advantage over a .243 Win.

I'm sure there are other smarter and cheaper ways to go about this, but none of them gave me the excitement of building a 408 wildcat. My enthusiasm for getting out to shoot this build went from an 8 to an 11.

Were do you live in north georgia,I live in woodstock.Last friday I just picked up a .338 lapua from accurate ordnance.Went to creekside saturday to sight in scope at 100yds.First 3 shot group 3/8's moa.3rd group measured under .200.Very awesome rifle and great work by Mark and the guys at AO.

I live up off Riverstone Pkwy in Canton. I have to start tracking down a long range within decent driving distance. I have been up to Riverbend, but I think they only have a 600 yard range. There is also one out past Athens that goes out to 700. You know of any longer ranges?

I have been shooting and hunting since I was about 8. .22 to .375 H&H and many in between. I haven't done the extreme long range before, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.... Seriously though, I want to get more serious about it and wanted to build something unique to me. Like I said before, I know I'm running before walking, but that's just my choice.

Yeah,I do a little bit of racing!Leaving tomorrow for e-town in jersey.I would like to find something with a little more distance.Talking to somebody in Calhoun about shooting in a soybean field.More than 1000 my bud tells me.Compared to my normal hobby this stuff is cheap.Been doing this for about a year now as a new hobby and having a good time with it.

Alright, well it seems like you're pretty set on that .338, so I won't try to discourage you anymore. As for optics, you might as well go all out. Schmidt and Bender or USO, naturally. Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your rifle.

Agreed you already jumped in head first so you might as well do the rifle a favor and put a worthy scope on it.

Only having 700 yards to play with you must have DEEP pockets!!!

Right now I am weighing out the pros and cons of the NXS 5.5-22x56, the new IOR 6-24 FFP, the Razor HD, the Bushnell HDMR, or a nice priced USO 3.2-17x44 TPAL. Although it may be difficult to find many areas to go past 1500yd (a buddy of mine has a farm) I want to be able to have a chance at longer should the opportunity arise.
