Hey guys. I'm new to the world of precision shooting and wanted some general advice on a good set up for a beginner. Only criteria I have is a total cost of about 2500$ and a common caliber that is easy to find and not overly expensive to practice with. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: New to the precision world.

Welcome the the HIDE, Jeff...

A good choice given your parameters of cost and range would be a rifle chambered in .308 Win.

The ammo selection for this caliber is extensive, and the cost
of shooting is mild in comparision to most other calibers.

There is an abundance of used, quality rifles in .308 available for sale most anytime, as well as new.

Barrel life is very good. Recoil is mild. Ammo is affordable.

.308WIN is going to be one of your best choices for shooting
up to 800M while maintaining a budget.

Remington always seems to be favorable. Look into a SPS. It leaves options with the remainder of the funds.

Nightforce and Vortex for optics.

If you watch closely in the classifieds, you can usually get great used gear.

There are many choices of brand out there, some better than others.

For rifle:
Remington 700 is a great choice to start with..

Some factory rifle offerings by Remington would be:

Remington 700 SPS, SPS tactical, VSSF, 5R, XCR Tactical.
All of these are good starting points. A quality scope, base and rings to complete your setup can be found here in the OPTICS and OPTIONS forums as well.

JBM ballistics is free online resource to study and learn about
the trajectory and ballistic elements.

As far as ammo goes, choice will be based on what twist rifling
you choose in your rifle you select.

There are many quality choices of .308 ammo..

Federal Gold Medal Match .308 ammo in 168gr and 175gr is well
known as an accurate, proven performer. It can be had for around a $1 a round. Site vendor PalmettoState normally stocks
both, amongst other brands.

Re: New to the precision world.

Do you plan on reloading? This is an important factor as .308 is not cheap. This is one reason I went with a Remington SPS Tactical in .223.

Re: New to the precision world.

I'm relatively new to long range precision shooting myself. Although I knew a lot about marksmanship principles and am huge into guns in general. This is my first bolt action rifle designed for long range shooting. For 2500 that's a pretty nice budget to get started with.

I bought a rem 700 sps tactical. Which was sub 600 bucks. 200 on a stock. 1250 on optics. 100 on a bipod. 220 on rings and base. That will put you just shy of your 2500 mark. I'm also buying a dmb, and bolt knob upgrade. Over 2500 total but I should have a nice ass setup.

Re: New to the precision world.

Don't forget the savage 10 series. They are in the same price and quality range as the rem 700. My friend just got a savage 10pc in 308 and he's very happy. I personally have a 700 pss or "police". The nice thing about the PSS is that it comes with an hs precision stock. I found mine used with bipod, trued bolt, badger bolt knob, trigger job, and limbsaver recoil pad for $725 on a local forum. Then I bought an egw base, and burris xtr rings for about $90 and a falcon menace 5.5-25 for $415. Its a decent setup that's MOA with decent ammo and .5-.75 moa with match ammo. I also bought 400 rounds of FGMM to get some time behind the rifle. If I had your budget I would have bought better glass, vortex pst or better.
