I have a lot of experience with 556 but not with trying to save fur. I am building a 17 Remington upper for coyotes but it’s taking to long. So my questions are...
1st. I have a 1/12 twist barrel ar upper. I salvaged it for parts but am throwing it back together to have something for coyote until my 17 is done. How heavy of a bullet can I run in it? I was keyholeing with 62gr but seemed to be ok with 55. I was only testing out to 100 though. When I used to shoot a lot I wasn’t concerned with weather my bullet made it through or not. Now I care. The lightest reasonably priced rounds I can find are Winchester 45g jhp. These should shoot flatter than 62 that I’m used too? I bought a hand press to reload and will have to get my feet wet eventually but am not sure if I should now or just go with factory a little more. I can’t afford a chrono right now so won’t be able to properly develop a load, just go with a proven recipe. I’ve seen as light as 40vmax if I reload though. What is less likely to come out the other side? Or should I be going as heavy as my barrel will stabilize? I saw 50, 52, and 53g as well? Combat zero is gonna be useless for this but say I settle for the 45g factory ammo.. do I still wanna zero to 50? Could someone with one of those fancy ballistic computers compute my holdovers for me? My barrel is 20” ammo is Winchester white box 45g jhp. I have one more store I can check Tuesday for hopefully more light options in .223. Yes I am that limited here and since I am in Alaska most vendors refuse to ship ammo, (has to be trucked to be legal) I have a 6.5 Grendel upper in 20 also, but I want smaller holes not bigger.. I thank y’all in advance for my newbie questions. Lotta stuff about this on other forums but it’s quite apperant that most of the responders are full of crap. I expect more knowledge and less b.s. from this crowd
