Rifle Scopes Newbie navigating mil-dot scopes

Hello all,

Thanks in advance for bearing with me as a newbie to longer range rifle shooting.

My wife just received a new rifle for Christmas - a Howa 1500 with 20" barrel. She's shot it a few times, but the cheapo Nikko Stirling scope it came with leaves something to be desired.

We have a budget of about 300 dollars to get her a mil-dot scope. She would like to use this rifle at low power for stalking game in the woods, and at high power to range distant objects and know her bullet drop.

I think I know what features we need, but am open to ideas. We want a 3-9x40 scope, with mil-dot reticle, which is illuminated. It need to be medium to high quality, lightweight, and rugged (in case the rifle is dropped). It also needs to have dials that you can turn with gloves on, and hopefully a locking system so that we can lock elevation at about 250 yards zero.

We would also like a scope that is parallax-free at 300 yards, if such exists.

We don't want a higher-power scope, as using the mil-dot reticle is for rangefinding on two-legged critters, and we don't want to zoom to, say, 20x to use the reticle.

I think she will want to shoot white-tails from 50 to 100 yards, and be able to hit man-sized targets out to 600 yards, with minimal turning of the dials. Right now the rifle is zeroed at 250 yards, which gives a +/- 4" out to about 290. We'll probably do the same with the new scope, and let her hold over / adjust elevation past that.

-- max 10x or 12x power
-- illumination
-- mil-dot
-- quality

$300+ rings is the budget. Any ideas????

Re: Newbie navigating mil-dot scopes

Yeah, I think this rifle is supposed to do a few different things, including some potential home defense at 5-100 yards, too. Maybe I'm asking too much of one rifle, but this is the only long gun my wife will get for a while...

That's why I'm thinking 3x-9x.

The Bushnell 3200 does get good reviews, though. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Newbie navigating mil-dot scopes

home defense? 20" bolt action? Maybe think about an AR platform instead and put the scope on that... I'd also hunt SWFA's samplelist for used/demo scopes, if you stretch your budget a wee bit you can get some great scores.

Good luck!

Re: Newbie navigating mil-dot scopes

Yeah, it's kind of a psychological game with my wife. I tell her, "Honey, how about a Glock 26 and a carbon-fiber AR-15? You can defend the home, and keep the Glock in your purse!"

...She ended up with a Sig p238 and a Howa 1500.

I don't ask questions. I just write the check.

Anyway, thanks for the help, guys. I think I found one that will suffice - the Nikon 2.5-10x42 with Mildot. It doesn't have an illuminated reticle, but as far as a I can tell, the cheapest one with that feature is the Leupold for $900 (ignoring the Leapers / BSA etc).

Once we get it installed, I will report back. Thanks again for the help.
