Thanks in advance for bearing with me as a newbie to longer range rifle shooting.
My wife just received a new rifle for Christmas - a Howa 1500 with 20" barrel. She's shot it a few times, but the cheapo Nikko Stirling scope it came with leaves something to be desired.
We have a budget of about 300 dollars to get her a mil-dot scope. She would like to use this rifle at low power for stalking game in the woods, and at high power to range distant objects and know her bullet drop.
I <span style="font-style: italic">think</span> I know what features we need, but am open to ideas. We want a 3-9x40 scope, with mil-dot reticle, which is illuminated. It need to be medium to high quality, lightweight, and rugged (in case the rifle is dropped). It also needs to have dials that you can turn with gloves on, and hopefully a locking system so that we can lock elevation at about 250 yards zero.
We would also like a scope that is parallax-free at 300 yards, if such exists.
We don't want a higher-power scope, as using the mil-dot reticle is for rangefinding on two-legged critters, and we don't want to zoom to, say, 20x to use the reticle.
I think she will want to shoot white-tails from 50 to 100 yards, and be able to hit man-sized targets out to 600 yards, with minimal turning of the dials. Right now the rifle is zeroed at 250 yards, which gives a +/- 4" out to about 290. We'll probably do the same with the new scope, and let her hold over / adjust elevation past that.
