Looking for the wisdom of the forum. My question is "Is it cheaper to by a pre-made sharp shooter set up or to build your own? I would say that I am better than the average Joe at shooting as to say that I hunt so I understand what goes into making a shot long or close but not a Pro by no means, I just Love the feeling of shooting my gun which is a .243 win bolt action(highly underrated) anyway your advice would be appreciated thanks......................Rob

Oh boy!! be prepared to take some heat for that.
A 308 is a good place to start. There are a number of fine gunsmiths here on the Hide that can build you a sub MOA rifle.

.308 is commonly used by law enforcement and the military version is the 7.62 I believe. what about a .338 lupua

7.62x51 NATO mil, .308 Winchester civ
How rich are you? .338 is not cheap and more than you really need if starting out.
You said your shooting experience is from hunting. No offense intended but in my experience guys that have only used firearms for hunting are generally poor marksmen. Start with something you can shoot a lot of and learn the fundamentals.

It's almost like having a Ferrari, but you can only drive it in first gear.... Now what fun would that be? Worst yet, it's like learning how to drive a stick shift with a Ferrari. It's going to cost you dearly. Please don't be offended by that.
308 will teach you about fundamentals of marksmanship, reading the wind, handloading for accurate shooting. Once you have mastered that then you can move to 338LM. Just remember that 338LM is chambered for $5 bill.

Sounds like you need to read up a little bit, there are more threads than you can read on this site, probably hundreds on this very subject. Dig in a little and you'll find what your looking for.

Thanks for the information, as well as the constructive criticism I agree I'm not the most educated on this. True most of my shooting comes from hunting, but some prior military. With that said if a man or woman(for the ladies reading this)wants to do something bad enough than he or she will learn as much as possible thus me joining the forum so that I make a well informed decision keep the info coming. So I'll start with looking at the .308 more closely I shoot a .243 so the ballistics are not that far off from each other you will get more out of the .308 penetration wise and Knockdown power certainly you've got more grain options on bullets.

Don't disregard the .243 to quickly, it's an awesome little round that ballistically eats 308's for lunch. If you reload I would stick with it and spend money on more components so you can shoot more if you already have an acceptable optic. Get on the online training forum here it's a bargain for what you get. Welcome

My setup is a/an .243 win with a Nikon pro-staff 3x9x40 great for deer hunting, coyote or small varmint. But for some long range outside of hunting I want something different to shoot at the range.

You may want to fill out your profile so people have a little better idea of who there talking to. Once you've been around here for awhile you'll see there is a low BS threshold here, guys here like straight shooters (no pun intended). Use the custom google search grab a beer and read for hours. I'll say again how beneficial the online training forum is, worth every penny.
