Shot iron sights in the military. No experience with scopes.

Would like your help with fitting my savage .308 bolt with a scope.

I'm teaching myself sniper marksmanship by the book. I'd like the scope to be mil-dot.

Also, my land has a lot of cedar (South Texas) and none of my clearings are further than 700 yards.

The guy at my local gun shop suggested the Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x20mm Illum Ret. It's within my $1000 budget.

Good choice or something better?

Thank you for sharing your expertise.

I don't think I would put a 1.5-5 on a rifle you wish to shoot out to 700. To get under your $1000 budget, how about a SS 3-9.

Check out Lowlight's review on the scope here .......

There are a lot of scopes that under 1K that will get you to 700 yards, you need to provide a list of criteria to narrow down the choices .....

By the way this question comes up a lot and you better have thick hide or conjure up some search foo ..........

Re: Newbie Request. Best Medium Range Scope

There are numerous options available for under 1000.

Nikon Monarch, excellent glass but a little wanting on the elevation adjustments (buy an EGW 20MOA base). Bushnell 4200 or 6500 series, Burris XTR series, Falcon Menace and Weaver Tactical.

The Weaver and Falcon are available as FFP scopes. The Weaver has 1/4 inch adjustments, the Falcon is available in 1/4" or .1 mil adjustments. The advantage of the FFP is that the mil-dots can be used for ranging and leads at any magnification. To me, that is the primary advantage, a lot of folks will chime in and tell you about the ease of making adjustments in .mils, and it is certainly valid to a point.

Since you are going to use it for hunting, i would recommend a variable power scope. By all accounts the SS 3-9 is an excellent scope, it is FFP and the adjustments are in .mils. The other SS scopes are also excellent buys, but the are 10x and above, not suitable for hunting.
