I have reading this forum for quite some time now and I've finally decided on a rifle. I have a Savage Model 12 F T/R on its way. Now I'm liking at scope mounts and/or rings. I think I have three options.
    1. Scope rings mounted to the action.
    2. A picatinny rail mounted to the action with a one piece scope mount.
    3. A picatinny rail mounted on the action with a two scope ring setup.

Which do you prefer and why?

Thanks for any info in advanced.

I like picatinny rails. It makes your stuff interchangeable between rifles. I also prefer one piece to two if you can handle the extra weight and height (it's tough to find a low 1 piece). A one piece also allows for elevation to be built into the mount, where most rings do not (Burris being an (the?) exception). I also tend to have more confidence that a one piece mount is straight since they're often machined from one piece. (again, Burris inserts make this irrelevant).

But the biggest factor is height - it's got to be right for your stock.

Best fit for your scope is to put the rifle at your shoulder and get comfortable with your eyes closed. Once you have a good cheek weld and everything feels good, open your eyes & the scope height should match your eye and center properly. If the rings are too tall or too short, you won't be able to shoot as accurately. You need to be comfortable and be able to look without straining or searching for the exit pupil.

One piece base (20moa), two piece rings.

Plenty of options out there, not to mention you can get your rings lower than with a quick detach one piece ring set. Only way I would go with a one piece setup is if i needed quick detach or my action had a rail already machined into it.
