Hello all,
My name is Justin. I am a 26 year old disabled veteran. I recently traded my dad an SBR upper for a Remington 700 .308 w/ a Leupold Vari-X-III Scope. I had the action trued, barrel cut to 24", Badger Knob installed, Badger bottom metal installed, Badger 20MOA Base, and Badger rings. The stock is an HS Precision. I currently live in Alaska, come this monday morning I will be moving to New Mexico. So I had my dad help me do a paint job to remember Alaska with.
I put 20 rounds of Federal Gold Medal Match 175 SMK through it today. Shot Sub MOA. I am anxious to learn more. He are a few pics.

Re: Newish Member with Newish Rifle

got to say JustinT like it. Got to love Alaska as I did a tour there in the 90"s in the 6ID(L) in Fairbanks and Anchorage. I have nothing but fond memories of that time in my career.

Good luck on the move and welcome to the this forum.

Re: Newish Member with Newish Rifle

Thank you all for the kind words. The rifle shoots wonderful. I only had 20 rounds with me last night. I was able to get 3 shots at 100 yds down to a 3/4" group. My dad and are planning on taking it back out tomorrow, with more ammo and will record some 5 shot groups. I also will be fabbing up a sand sock/rear bag. I can already see how handy that could be to have.
I also will be saving up for a new scope, probably something MIL/MIL and with finer adjustments.
Speaking about scopes, I would like to extend many thanks to Chad Dixon at Long Rifles Inc. My 700 action scope base holes were out of whack, Maxing out my wind-age adjustment to the left. He was able to machine and tap new holes(8-40) that brought back my wind-age adjustments. This might not be a normal turn-around time, but I received a call on a Saturday morning saying that it was ready to be shipped back, when I asked when they received it, they said that it came in the mail the day before. (Friday..Less than 24hrs.)

Shooting was done at Birchwood Shooting Range, AK.

Re: Newish Member with Newish Rifle

Muzzle brake works, not that its necessary. I figured one day I might get a suppressor and it looks way cooler than a thread protector.

Here's a pic of my first few shots.
1st shot @ 25yds to make sure I was on paper.
Next 2 shots at 100yds to make adjustments.
Next 3 shots at 100yds (1st Round Center Punched the target)

I had to make the most of the 20 rounds I had.
Going out tomorrow for one more Shoot in Alaska(for a while)
Also made a rear bag, hope that helps out.

Thanks for the service and welcome to the Hide. your moving to a good state for LR shooting. There are tons of great hide members from the Arizona/New Mexico area of the US. Lots of friendly local matches that you will learn a ton at as well as get to see and shoot lots of different gear.

look in the "snipers hide member link up" to track down some NM guys.

Re: Newish Member with Newish Rifle

I bought 100 more rounds today. Very expensive, but a little nicer when your former boss cuts a deal as a farewell gift. Headed to the range in the morning. I would like to test the tracking in the scope. I have some problems though, the scope has MOA adjustments with a Mil-Dot reticle. 1 click = 1min for elevation & 1 click = 1/2 min for wind-age. I have a mil-dot master packed away , is there a formula that would allow me to read the reticle in Mils and make the right adjustments in MOA to test tracking? Am I over thinking all of this right now?
I'm am aware of the Google search, but I am on my cell phone for the next few hours. If someone could Point me in the right direction I would appreciate it, if not no big deal , I could wait.

That's probably about 3 hours from where I'm at. You'll have plenty of spots to shoot.
