I’ll start off by saying I don’t NEED another rifle. I have an AXMC in 260 and 338LM which should be able to do everything under the sun. I also have bolt guns in 416Wby, 338WM, 300WM, 7mmWby, 260, and an AR10 in 243. I just put payment down on an Origin action. Thoughts are for a 16-18” barrel. Light weight hunting rifle that a friend could borrow for local PRS style shoots if needed. So far the 6 creed is sticking in my head. Also the 243. Is there anything else I should be looking at? I have the ability to reload, however I usually use factory ammo.

It would depend a lot on what you are hunting, 6 creed and .243 in a short barrel will be more limited to the not so big stuff.
Also for PRS style shoots, a 16-18" barrel on a 6cm or .243 might wind up being a bit harder to be competitive on longer range shots.

I knew I forgot something. I’m in the north central US. Mostly whitetail and smaller. Shots range from 0-400 mostly. I guess it doesn’t HAVE to be a shorter barrel. I’m mostly looking for something handy and easy to carry/maneuver.

    7-08?
A 162gr out of a 18" barrel is good enough for most hunting and could be competitive in matches. Plus your brass and powder could be similar to your 260. Factory ammo available. I think 7mm is a better choice than 6mm in a barrel that short.

Or you could just do it in short barrel 260. 123gr from a 18" 260 probably does 2800fps.

These are not sexy solutions, just simple ones that make some sense if you know and enjoy the 260.

6mm calibers perform really well and shine bright outta longer barrels. Not saying it can't be done out of an 18 inch but maybe consider a shorty 6.5 creed, 260, or even 308??? Just some food for thought!

I'd say 22 is barely getting by. Mostly people run these clamberings in 26 inch tubes, 24 is good. I don't have much, if any experience with these though. Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable on this will chime in.

If you usually shoot factory ammo 6.5 creed is hard to beat. I get good velocity out of a 20" barrel with it.

I don't personally see the point in 260 with 6.5 CM now. Similar ballistics with more powder and more recoil and less factory ammo choices.

That being said, I'd go 7-08 all day long for what you're talking about.

I’ve been shooting 260 since it came out. No need to switch to the 6.5CM. I’ll have to give some thought to the 7-08.

While I agree that the 6.5 exists simply due to the lack of support from Remington for the .260, where did you get your information that the .260 uses more powder and had more recoil than a 6.5 Creedmoor?

Recoil is directly dependent on the weight of the projectile, the speed of the projectile and the weight of the firearm being used. All said and done the 6.5 is a better designed cartridge using modern design knowledge, but the results at either end of the Rifle are pretty much the same as the .260.

That said, I do recommend to new shooters the 6.5 Creedmoor over the .260. Simply because it does have more readily available and cheaper factory match offerings and will likely replace the .260 in the Rifle history books.

Oh yeah, I know guys who have more H4350 behind their 6.5 projectiles than I use behind my same size .260 projos. I just don’t see the need to drive a 140 class bullet at 2900+ fps when it costs me half of my usable barrel life.

    Different strokes I guess,
