I have the chance at a fairly good deal for a NXS 2.5-10x32 w/ mil locking turrets (zero stop). I have two SWFA 1-6's on pre-order (one for the AR, and the other for the MATEN), and am considering canceling one of them to pick up the nightforce. This is for my 18" Mega MATEN 308 short to mid range rifle. Any input?

How short is your "short" range consideration? Red Dot distance like 25-50m? If so, then I'd recommend sticking with the 1-6x range of scopes.

If your mid range shooting is 2+ moa targets within 500m, you'll be fine with the 6x on the top end. Anything more or smaller, then you're going to have to give on one end or the other. Your application will dictate what one you need more.

I'd need to know a bit more about the Nightforce other than that it has "locking turrets" (whatever those are); but my knee jerk is to go with the Nightforce.

For a .308, I would think that the Nightforce would let the rifle stretch its legs a bit more.

Re: Nightforce 2.5-10 or SWFA 1-6

My range that I shoot at is usually 100yrds, but I'd like to be able to go up to 5-600yards, more if possible but not likely on a regular basis.

The scope specs are mil turrets, zero stop (not locking turrets, sorry), w/ the mildot reticle.

I've had a FFP IOR 3-18 and liked it, and I think the FFP on the SWFA would be nice but more for the fact that on low power it looks like a red dot, and a mildot at high power. It seems to me that to really appreciate the ranging consistency of the FFP, you'd need a higher power than 10x, though I may be wrong. I figure that with the NXS, most scope adjustments would be at 10x anyway.

Here is a review of our FFP 1-4x:

600 is no problem for the 1-4x and you can range with its mil reticle on 4x. The extra 2x magnification you get with our 1-6x makes a huge difference in the field.

You want to go from 5-600 yards, right? The SS 1-6x24 FFP is by far better suited for the task.

We don't use FFP in our 1-4x and 1-6x so you can range on any power we use it to provide you with two scopes in one. A CQB scope on 1x and ae mid to long range scope on 6x for ranging and hold over.

With the current promo going on you could get one and if you don't like it you could sell it for a profit and get into the NF for less at a later date.

With an FFP reticle, the ranging consistency is only a part of the story. Perhaps more important is the ability to use holdover and wind holds with the reticle without paying any attention to the magnification. Ability to walk in your own shots with the turrets (by noting how far off the impact is with a matching reticle) can also be useful.

Bottom line is that the two are really very different scopes. For deliberate precision shooting, the higher magnification Nightforce is a better option. For a good compromise of speed and precision the 1-6x24 SS is the way to go. It really depends on what you want to do with it.

This is what I did... works awesome... Thanks Jay.

Although I am picking up a SWFA 1-6x for my Larue PredatAR. :p

I would go with the nightforce. You can still power down (2x) and then get some good shots out past 500 on 10x. NF handles mirage well at longer distances. I'm sure the SS 1x6 is going to be a solid scope but....... I don't know about you but I'm like a little kid. Gota have it know. ha! (Have the same NF on a AR15 for long range)
