Hi all

I’m planing on purchasing one of these for a hunting build I have going on. I’m torn between going with FFP or SFP.

Im very comfortable with FFP scopes and I’ve owned quite a few. My competition days are over, and am just looking to get the right scope for hunting. I know that on the low end of a FFP it can be hard to see the cross hairs on a close up coyote.

Ill mostly be hunting coyotes and deer, with some target plinking mixed in.

I’ve done my research and have narrowed it down to this scope.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

thanks Bob

There is no downside to FFP in this optic in my opinion. The illumination is good and can be used in low light. 4x, it's a plex reticle. I'm usually not shooting at max magnification due to mirage, FOV, etc. when actually taking a shot at game making the subtentions usable at any magnification.

Thanks for the replies so far. Does anyone own one for hunting? What reticle?

I've got a MIL-C and MIL-R. Although I like the reticle design of MIL-C better, the MIL-R is thicker and probably slightly better for coyotes in my opinion. It's a simple plex when needed but also has enough subtentions to be usable.. I think it's a pretty good balance for hunting.

I have a SFP ATACR 4-16x50 with MOAR reticle I use exclusively for coyote hunting. I absolutely love this scope. However, like the above comments have said, there are advantages with FFP as far as if you will use it on targets, resale value, etc. I just got such a killer deal on mine that I took it because I knew I was only using it for hunting. Nothing better than seeing that floating crosshair on coyote fur. YMMV

I'm in the same situation as you. I've narrowed it down to the 4-16 x 50 ATACR. I'm at the point where a thicker reticle helps my older eyes. I already have a 5x25 ATACR SFP MOAR that I have on a heavier bench rifle and dialing works fine for me. For a lighter hunting/general shooting rifle I'm thinking the FFP/MOAR may be the way to go. Resale value is not an issue for me, just a rerticle that works. YOUR thoughts?

Is there any reason you are going with the 50mm over the 42. I seem to remember a post by Terry cross on here that the difference between the 50 vs 42 was like 1 minute visibility difference at dusk. I am not remembering exactly but the gist of it was that there wasn't much difference. I want this exact some but in 42. Just wondering why go the 50. Thanks

For hunting I would take a hard look at the 2.5-20 nx8. That low power is nice for the close shots and the scope is smaller. Depending on distances the 1-8 is a good choice too. I have all 3

The 42mm is the way to go as to looks cooler.

I had a 4-16x42 with the MOAR reticle for my 6.5 grendel gas gun. Loved that scope and think it’s damn close to perfect for a hunting optic. However, I swapped all my scopes to Mil, and haven’t got around to snagging another one just yet. But, another one with a Mil-C reticle will be finding a home on one of my rifles in the near future??

I think the second focal plane would suit you very well. In my opinion, you don't need a first focal plane reticle unless your scopes magnification is over 20x due to heavy mirage that can distort your image. with the 16x on the high end, it is plenty of magnification for long distance shots. And if you need to zoom out for closer shots, the wind wont have much of an affect of your bullet.

I agree. SFP works well in low to mid-powered scopes and the benefits are advantageous for hunting duty.
