I have a NF 5.5x22x50 NSX with turrets in MOA and the reticle is in mils. I've called NF to confirm this and that's what I have..The reticle is a MRL. I want to start shooting long range and wanted to hear what you guys have to say about it. Should I change out the turrets or reticle? Isn't mils what most that shoot long range use? Any help would be much appreciated. Oh the scope is SFP.

Thanks

Mike

There's nothing wrong with what you have, you just have to learn it. I have been shooting MOA knobs with mildot reticle since 2002. That said, I rarely use the reticle for wind holds, I just estimate the wind and hold that much off the targets.

I purchased a NXS F1 moa/moa. I can see where this can be handy for someone just starting out. That said, you can plug you scope specs into a ballistics program and get your holds or just treat the reticle like a duplex except for finding your shooting solution. Reticle holds won't be as easy with a SFP scope as a FFP, but they're doable as long as you know your magnification and where the reticle subtends.

Been there, done that. If you are going to seriously get into this game then sell the scope.

I switched out the reticle for an MOA one and then went to Rifles Only for a course. I was the only one shooting MOA and struggling to adapt because it was just too complex to figure out magnification / hold over at numerous power levels. Working at 11 or 22x is fine but if you hold yourself to only those power levels you probably aren’t getting knee deep into the sport. After the course, I sold the scope and bought a Razor Gen II in mils. Couldn’t be happier. Accept you have a sub-optimal setup in terms of both reticle/turrets and SFP, decide if you are getting seriously into this and if the answer to both is yes then sell and re-buy is my advice.

That is exactly what I came to realize after a year of using my 5.5-22 with MOAR-T. Found I like decimals more than fractions (so wanted MILs) and didn’t want to have to always be at certain magnifications for my reticles to mean anything. So I sucked it up and sold the scope and got something that better fit my needs.

Make it easy, send it back to NF and have them change out the turrets to mil. You can either get them in the high speed (10mil per rev) or the older 5 mil per rev. Add zero stops while its there. Did that about 6 years ago at 460 bucks.

Even with a turret swap or a reticle swap, the reticle is still gonna be in the second focal plane.
I'd sell it and get the right tool for the job.
It should fetch some decent money, it is an NF NSX after all.
A used ERS or the like shoudn't be but a few hundred bucks away at that point.

Thank you to all who offered their advice. I think I'm going to sell the scope as is and get one in mils.

I agree. if your anything like me, I try and upgrade my equipment every so often. for me to do that, and for my wife to stay married to me, I have to sell things. putting more money into an optic and making it mil/mil or moa/moa is almost a losing proposition. good luck with your venture and you will not go wrong with NF.
