Rifle Scopes Nightforce NXS 2.5x10x42 SFP Mil-R or ATACR 4-16x42FFP for 16” 5.56 Noveske Recon?

I own the 4-16x42. Its on a 308 Lightish bolt gun. I really like it however it is a beefy scope at 34 mm diameter. I would say if you want a scope for your rifle that you won't want to ever transfer to a larger gun for longer range get the 10x. I would keep that Noveske as lite as possible. Truth be told I usually shoot out to 500m at 12 power because the reticle gets a bit thick for me at 16x for small targets.

Best of luck.

For your application either should work fine. I’ve hunted with the 2.5-10x32mm NF and enjoyed the weight and size. I’ve since moved to the 4-16x42mm and while it is bigger, I really enjoy the FFP reticle.

Having said that, for a hunting application, I’d probably go with the lower magnification. I’d probably even prefer something without adjustable parallax. For everything else, the 4-16.

The 2.5-10 is an AWESOME SPR/DMR scope for a 5.56 gun. I run a FFP 1-8 on mine, but have run 2.5-10 before. I think it will do all a 5.56 is capable of.
My ATACR 4-16 is on my 6.5 GAP-10, where I think it’s FANTASTIC.
My opinion: 2.5 for small frame, 4-16 for large frame.

I’ve recently gone through the same choice for my 16 inch 308.

Went with the 2.5-10x24 (for weight balance and handling) and it’s been sent to nightforce to get the MLR in it. Then I’ll get a 4-16 with the MIL XT if I feel I need it for competitions when the season starts. But I’ll only throw that on for comps/long range classes and trips where I think I’ll need it. If I decide I need it.

I only shoot out to 650m at home at 1/2 and 3/4 IPSC targets so x10 should be enough. At least it was when I was playing with my last scope at x10 to check how I would fair. Long as the glass is good I feel I’ll be fine out to 1000m. But we will see.

I had looked at the SHV 3-10x42 as an option also but it was lacking illumination, now they are making a version with center illumination. But I keep leaning toward the NXS. From all the responses it seems like the 2.5 for 5.56, and the 4-12 for 308.

I've recently switched from an NXS 2.5-10x24 w/ Mil-R to an ATACR 4-16x42F1 w/ Mil-C on my 18" 5.56.

I found the NXS to be very handy and practical for making hits with what feels like a larger carbine. I have been happy with it's performance, shooting it out to about 800 yds.

The ATACR is noticeably bigger, but so is the performance. I can see everything better, so I can shoot more accurately and gain information about my hits and misses better. The compromise is that it goes from being a handy rifle to a more compact precision rifle. I can't imagine liking the size of the 4-16x on a smaller gun.

With both set on x10 how much better is the atacr?

I have the 2.5-10x42 on a 16" 308 ar10. I love it. For the capabilities of that gun it is about perfect. The only scope i would even consider trading for would be one of the high end 1-8 scopes, but I'm still not sure i would let it go.

I've had both and for this application I prefer the NXS. In addition to it's size and weight advantages, rhe SFP reticle makes it usable at every mag setting where I found the ATACR difficult to use below 6-8x. Though, the great thing about the 4-16 ATACR is that it is an optic you can put on nearly any rifle.

Resolution and clarity wise x10 mag on both, does the ATACR win by much or is it pretty similar?

Second Notdylan’s assessment. It’s not remotely close actually. The ATACR glass is a yuge jump from the NSX in clarity, brightness and contrast, esp at higher magnifications

I recently struggled with this very same question for my 5.56 SPR. I found a new contender that fit in between weight and length: Mk5 3.8-18 . It ended up being my choice.

NF 2.5-10x42
Length: 11.9 in
Weight: 20.5 oz

NF 4-16x42 ATACR
Length: 12.6 in
Weight: 30 oz

Leupy 3.6-18x44
Length: 12.06 inch
Weight: 26 oz
