I have a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15X56. I am thinking about upgrading to an F1 model for the first focal plane feature. I was wondering if any of you have made this move and if you noticed any difference in the scopes light gathering capabilities and is worth the move?

I have both. There's no appreciable difference between the 56 and the 50, except that you have to mount the 56 higher. Get the 50mm F1 and don't worry about it.
That said, you don't need FFP unless you plan to engage multiple targets at multiple distances under time constraints (and will be messing with the power ring to do it).

i think the f1 has better glass, so that may negate the light gathering properties of it having a smaller bell.

Glass is a 'spec' thing - as long as it is within 'spec' it's good to go. Some scopes have an image near the minimum acceptable, and some have an image that is better than expected.
Besides, with premium scopes it's rarely the glass and usually the coatings.

You will like the F 1, especially if you get theMLR2 reticle. Having run several 50 and 56mm NXS Nightforces, I can see no difference in low light conditions.In my opinion reticle selection is way more critical than objective size with Nightforce scopes.

If you got wit the F1 they only come in 50mm. As for the RET I like both the MLR2 and the MD2 I prefer the MD2 for speed but I feel the MLR2 is better for matches.

Also you will not notice the difference between the 50mm and the 56mm at 15x nor at 3.5x.
