I am in the process of deciding on a new scope. For years I have wanted something nice and have always wanted a Nightforce. When I began to look at the different discussions on here about this scope I am a little confused. I know that Nightforce is a good scope. It is built with quality and is known for being repeatable and bulletproof. My concern is with the glass. Nightforce is used by many benchrest shooters and world records have been set with this scope. I would think that benchrest would require the best glass they could find. I have looked a quite a few threads that have made me question the clarity of Nightforce glass. I hope I do not offend anyone with this topic but I need to know what kind of glass I am getting. If I go pay 2000 for a scope will my dad's old Vari-x III be as clear or more clear for half the cost?

the glass is very clear. its hard for the eye to tell the difference between good glass. now obviously a cheap 40 dollar scope will not have the clarity of a 2000 dollar scope, but you may find that whether its a higher end leupold, nikon, zeiss, swarvo, etc; its hard to tell the difference. you will be able to see what you are looking at and it will be clear. i love my nightforce.

Nightforce has pretty good glass but its not much better than Leupold or even Nikon. If you are expecting radically better glass you will be disappointed.
The best glass for the least money is IOR. You are taking a bit of risk because reliability is spotty. But the glass is German glass, best there is. Its a Bulgarian S&B. Call Liberty Optics.
If you really want the best of the best, probably only Schmidt and God will do. Trying to get S&B on a budget? Take a look at a Police fixed 10x. You get the glass and features and it IS a S&B. Tricky mounting to get to 1000 yards. I think you need a 25moa base. It only has 45moa of total elevation. Barely enough. Need a good gunsmith to mount it and have 30moa of up. Talk to Euro Optics.

The resolution quality of a NF is almost second to none. It may not have the vibrance or contrast of some other scopes but its ability to resolve detail at distance is superb.
Optical quality is often very subjective by the user.
We have the ability to test our product on sophisticated test equipment in order to measure many aspects of the finished product and often objectively compare it to what our competitors produce. One of those tests is resolution. If it does not meet our spec, we send it back through the line for correction or rebuild. I can only think of one other optic manufacturer that consistently provides better resolution.
One thing that we like to promote is that every single Nightforce Rifle Scope goes through a 70 plus point quality assurance inspection process before it leaves the factory in Idaho. If something is going to fall short, we catch it 99.5% of the time prior to it going to market. When you see those inspection tags on each and every Nightforce, that certifies that it passed our strenuos QC process before getting in to the consumers hands. It is not a batch test. Thats SOP for every scope we build.
As noted above, optic appeal as viewed by the end user can be very subjective. Other optics may appear to look all bright and colorful. Ours may not jump out at you in that aspect, but take our scope and a competitors scope and try viewing a small caliber bullet hole at a 2-300 yards and you will start to see the difference in resolution, often referred to as clarity.

Well I run a 12-42X NXS on my 600 and 1000 yard bench rifle. The last 600 yard match I shot I could see my bullet holes on target! Yes the conditions where good (no mirage) and this does not always happen...but when it does it is pretty impressive to see. Unless your score was like mine that day! I was kinda wishing I could NOT see the holes.
None of the other brands of scopes on the line that day could see bullet holes...only the folks running NightForce. Take it for what its worth.
I just sold a 5.5-22X NXS and had no problem seeing .224 bullet holes at 300 yards with it.
I do not think you would be disappointed with a NF.

I compared a NF to a Mk4 side by side for a bit last weekend. I couldn't see ANY differences between the two. Glass is more than adequate for most though, including my self.

If people like Lowlight are recommending them do you really think the glass is not acceptable? Maybe it's not THE BEST GLASS IN THE WORLD but you can't have everything. There are always tradeoffs.

I have twelve NF scopes. My oldest is from 2002. Never, ever had any issue with them. They are tough as nails. Glass is good enough to suit almost anyone.
Buy the NF you want and never look back.

Thanks for the replies. After reading these post the Nightforce sounds good. Now the only thing that concerns me is I wear glasses and am severely near sighted. Many have said focusing with glasses is more difficult with this scope. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Everybody wears glasses when they shoot. If you don't need perscription glasses then safety glasses or sun glasses.

I think he is referring to prescription glasses instead of just safety/sun glasses.
And you are correct, everyone SHOULD be wearing some eye protection at the range.

For the price I believe Nightforce offers a very good product. I would not hesitate to purchase another and probably will to put on my next GAP.....JaxOps

With the reticle focus feature and the parallax adjustment, I have not had any issues with clearly focusing on things, bullet holes on 200yd targets or terrain features at longer distances. I have a couple of NF BR scopes and they are good enough to have gotten me a few 0.1 inch groups.
My buddy that does a lot of bench stuff shoots like that most of the time. He uses Nightforce.
The scope is a siting device, image clarity has little effect on this. Go to a BR shoot and have your ass kicked by some old codger with a dirty old Weaver...It will happen...I'm not saying how I know that

+1 for nightforce. They are extremely relieable and repeat each and every time. As far as the glass, I am okay with it, but if you set it next to the highend Vortex, Zeiss, SB and Leicas you will be somewhat dissapointed. I would compare the glass to a mark 4, IOR, Premier and USO.
With that being said, bang for the buck. I have almost all NF scopes on my rifles.

my nxs side by side with my leupold vxIII the NF is better IMO. That is outside under natural light. inside under floresent light I cant tell a difference in glass

Sounds like we have the same eye problems,I run a NF 5.5-22x50 npr2 with no issues either. You should be fine.

I have owned NF scopes since the early to mid 90's, have 2 of the old varminter models. I currently own 5 NF scopes and hope to add 1-2 more in the near future. NF reputation and quality are tops in my book.

NF 3.5 15x50F1 whether is high end for some people or not it is to me and don't regret investing the money on it,and will buy another one in a heart beat,although i would like to have an USO as well...

I am 61 years old and wear progressive bifocal eyeyglasses! Progressive bifocials make it harder because you have to align a very specific portion of the eyeglass lens with the scope, not just anywhere on the eyelglass lens, since some portions of the eyeglass lens are for "far" viewing while others are for "close" viewing(this is with using ANY scope of course). I use a Nightforce 12-42 x 56.NEVER any focus issues. Clear view of individual bullet holes at 250 yards. I am sure I could see bullet holes further IF my range had paper targets beyond 250 yards (they don't - only metal pop-ups).
Others have noted that different Nightforce models have different rnages of internal MOA adjsutment. My "benchrest" model has "only" 40 degrees of internal elevation MOA. With a 20 degree rail, that handles everything from 100 yards to 1000 yards without having to use holdover.
The parallax adjustor is wonderful. It is actually precise enough that it can double as an approximate range finder.

Nightforce is used by many benchrest shooters and world records have been set with this scope. I would think that benchrest would require the best glass they could find. I have looked a quite a few threads that have made me question the clarity of Nightforce glass. I hope I do not offend anyone with this topic but I need to know what kind of glass I am getting. If I go pay 2000 for a scope will my dad's old Vari-x III be as clear or more clear for half the cost? </div></div>
Good call on your purchase. I have the same one and its amazing. Dont worry about the negative reviews you read on it. I've learned that a shit load of people tend to read someone else's reviews and regurgitate it as their own personal experience when in fact they've never even seen, held or own the thing that they're talking about.

I was under the impression that presently all Nightforce scopes are assembled in Idaho, the glass and other components for the scopes come from Japan. As for the scopes themselves, I have two, a 2.5-10x24 on my AR and a 12-42x56 on my FT/R rifle, I also have an fixed power IOR that I am going to replace very soon with either an F1 or one of IOR's new FFP scopes. With regards to the quality of Nightforces glass, you will not be disappointed, as mentioned above the resolution or clarity is outstanding, now it doesn't seem to have the vibrance my IOR has, but thats probably just my personal preference. I have had the opportunity to look through S&B, Hensoldt and March, and the glass on these scopes, well its simply just impressive, I do think personally that the IOR does give them a run for its money (for its price). Comparing my NF's scopes glass to some other scopes, well they just don't seem to have that clarity that the NF has.

The F1's and Compacts are Made and Assembled in the USA. Glass is still Japanese.
All other scopes are final assembled and QC'ed at our factory in Idaho.
It is 100% American labor that goes in to final assembly and QC at our factory in Orofino,Idaho.
We are progressing more and more to "Made In USA" Product.

When you get everything mounted I know that the rest of the forum including myself would love to see some pictures of the final product along with a range report. Let us know how it turns out.

I got my scope in yesterday and it amazing. It is the most clear scope I have ever looked through. It is everything I thought it would be and more. The bad news is I went to put the scope on this morning and I didn't read the directions for the Badger base. I put the Fat Wrench on 30 pounds and stripped the front screw. It made me sick. I called Badger and was told to send an email with my request. The screws will be shipped at no charge. I will post pics when I get the scope on the rifle but it will a few more days.

I'm going through the same process now. After stretching my 300winmag to 1350yds last week, I'm looking for more mag than my current Leupold Mark4. I considered another Leupold, S&B, Premier, and Nightforce. Due to cost, I narrowed that down to Leupold and Nightforce. I looked through both scopes side by side and could see no difference in optical quality. And my current Leupold Mark 4 has tracked flawlessly for me. My friend has had to send his Nightforce NXS back in for service twice now. I'd say save some coin and go for a Mark 4. You will be happy

I have 3 NightForce scopes and the .55-22X56 NXS with ZS, HST and the NP-R1 reticle is my favorite. Chris also helped me,great guy.

I've owned about 6 or 7 VX-IIIs and two NF. Hands down, both NF scopes were better than any of the Leupolds I've owned. While not necessarily being much noticeably "brighter" necessarily, they resolve much, much better. I can make out bullet holes further and pick up on targets I cannot see with a Leupold. But the reason to buy a NF isn't necessarily glass quality alone. They are going to track right, they don't have the annoying lash effect on the focus, they are durable, and reliable. I've broken Leupolds, but I've never hurt either of my NF scopes.

As far as glass goes, I think upper end Leupold and Nightforce are pretty much on par with one another. Both are plenty good enough to see a target and put a hole in it, plain and simple.
If you want jaw dropping, pecker growing glass quality, I wouldnt consider either brand.
Ive had a LOT of leupolds and have never had a problem with a single one. Nightforces durability is widely championed.
Find the features you want, and get the cheaper one? Flip a coin?
