Re: Nightforce Reticles

The 8-32 has very little elevation(I have the 12-42 and speak from first hand experience), It barely gets a 308 to 1000 with a 20 moa base. I like the 12-42, it is quite shootable on a warm day at 12x, plus on a cool day the 42 is awesome for shooting little groups.

Get the 5.5-22 and you still will have just enough elevation to do what you want(although I think with a 300 win mag you will not reach to a mile) better also get a 40moa base. With my 408 and 40 moa base I need about 90 moa for shots over a mile.

MLR is my favorite.

Actually they are going from 5 MIL per rev to 10 MIL per rev (the ones I saw at SHOT had that set up anyway).

Go with the 5.5x22. You sound like MOA reticle works best for you so get that one, nothing wrong with them at all. I have used MOA/MOA and now use MIL/MIL, they both get the job done if the shooter does his part...

Re: Nightforce Reticles

I have a 5.5x22x50 with NPR-1 reticle moa it is easier to do the math in your head than Mils. All I use at work is mils and I end up using my mil dot master more because the math is harder.

Re: Nightforce Reticles

I appreciate all the comments and opinions. I ordered the 5.5-22X56 with MOA turrets, and the NP-R1 reticle today.

Since I'm used to the MOA turrets, I went with them. The NP-R1 reticle seemed to pair well with the MOA turrets.

Thanks again to everyone!!

Re: Nightforce Reticles

The NP R1 is the way to go. I have shot with it and I feel that its the best for MOA it has more options then the R2 based on the reticle. You may want to consider zero stops also.

Re: Nightforce Reticles

Actually the NP-R1 reticle becomes an inch per hundred yard reticle when used properly for rangefinding (people naturally bracket between stadia lines instead of from center to center). So when one line thickness is subtracted the unit of subtension actually becomes 0.982 IPHY which is close enuf to 1 IPHY.

Really? I knew the MilDot had a mil/moa option, but the MLR I had was mil/mil and seemed like everyone carried that.

Ya - i was pretty disappointed at the transmogrified configuration on my NXS with MLR. Quoting NO's technical support:
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Thank you for writing Nightforce Optics.

Our optics are sold standard with .25 moa clicks. We offer several different turrets with each scope to include 1/10 mil turrets. The mil turrets are an upgrade and would have to be specified when initially ordering the scope.

We do offer retrofits for your scope including the addition of the Mil radian turrets. This would cost $ 320.00 and would take approximately 4-5 weeks to perform.

If this is something you are interested in having performed, please see the attached document. Please let me know if I can be of additional assistance.

It borders on one of the more stupid things i've heard in my life; it would be like were my speedometer in miles per hour, but i could only adjust cruise control in kilometers per hour.

Re: Nightforce Reticles

Yeah, it is really stupid. I'm looking at buying a Nightforce right now and I would like mil/mil. The MLR reticle is a no-cost option, but the mRad turrets add roughly $100 to the price - when you can even find them without the zero stop. Most retailers who offer mRad turrets force you to include the Zero Stop, so you end up spending about $250 more than a scope with moa/moa. It's beyond me why NF would offer a free reticle especially for people who are comfortable with mRad and then charge them extra for the proper click values.
