I am getting ready to purchase a high end scope, but I have noticed so many Nightforce scopes for sale. What is the reasons for getting rid of if they are good as they say they are?

A lot of people are upgrading to the high speed and zero stop models and selling the older non HS and ZS is easier and cheaper than getting one upgraded. Also times are tuff and the toys are the first thing to go. I have a couple of them and couldn't be happier with them.

If you get one make sure it it set up how you want.
NF is backed up and who knows when they will be able to configure a used scope. Glad I called because the reticle I wanted changed is not even available anymore "NP-1". Called around and found one still in stock.

I've sold a few S&B and NF scopes on this board and my reasons were pretty much exactly what was mentioned above. I wish I could've kept my S&B scopes but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I wish they would make a scope with FFP on their 5.5-22 with a Horus style reticle. Also, I don`t like when you turn up the power knob the whole eyepiece turns. Maybe they will next year.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about the SWFA SS 5-20X50 scopes...but then I realized that there were some that were just trying to make a buck.

I have eleven NF scopes. All but a couple have been the HS/ZS models or upgraded to those features. Some were purchased inexpensively on SH that had the reticle I wanted and I just sent them in for HS?ZS upgrade and some were purchased here with those options already there.
For the $$, I just don't think you can beat their overall quality.

Would not hesitate to buy a Razor. I have one of the new Viper PST FFP scopes and am very impressed with it. Vortex is a great company to deal with. Maybe best CS in optics.

A lot of folks are realizing the advantages of first focal plane scopes. The F1 is staying but sold the 2 NF SFP 5.5-22x56's I had even though they are a great scope.

They are popular because they are fairly reasonably priced for the quality. Once you step up in quality, the price is also significantly higher. There are so many NF scopes for ales because of the bad economy.

The want of FFP scopes over SFP
Some just have scope ADD....they are never happy (I thought at one time i was in this catagory).
I love my NF scopes, however I have branched out a bit and gave a couple others a try. I bought the new Mark 4 with the M5 turrets and MLR recticle in FFP and I love it. I'm not even about to say its better than another scope, that's all opinion, but I'm extremely pleased with it thus far. I also picked up a SSHD in FFP. I've only fondled it thus far. The rifle it is going on should be back from the Smith tomorrow hopefully and it will get mounted up. I hope it performs well. It will be on the gun I will be shooting matches with.
I'd love to see a FFP 5.5-22 NF, but that may or may not ever become a reality. If they could produce that and still keep it at or below $2K with the quality they've been known for, it'd be a awesome scope that was somewhat affordable by folks. However, you can't please everyone so who knows what the future holds.
Take advantage of all the used NF's for sale. Scoop one up at a good price. You'll be more than pleased with it and even better if it's at a good price. As said above, get one with the turrets/recticle that YOU want that way your not trying to sell it 3-6 months after you buy it.

Just because you see Nightforce, doesn't mean that they are all the same, as was already stated, you need to find the one that is set up the way you want it. I spent $320. dollars upgrading to High speed turrets and zero stop, so it is not a cheap upgrade.
With the economy the way it is, the Gun/Guy toy market is a little soft, which means it is a great time to buy a quality rifle or scope.

The number of a manufacturers scopes for sale in the used section is a good indication of the number of those scopes in existence and a poor indication of how well liked they are. Careful, the 8-32 has much, much less elevation than the 5.5-22, and you'll likely max out your turret before you max out those 300gr high-BC bullets...even on a 20 or 30moa base. My TRG42 has this issue, even with 250gr Scenars.

Careful, the 8-32 has much, much less elevation than the 5.5-22, and you'll likely max out your turret before you max out those 300gr high-BC bullets...even on a 20 or 30moa base. My TRG42 has this issue, even with 250gr Scenars.

The result is a lot of NXS scopes get sold to fund upgrades. On top of that it looks to me like the NXS scopes are getting some serious price pressure. Look at used NXS scopes here, they don't jump off the page. I don't think NF can afford to produce a sub $2000 FFP scope, because if they do they'll crush their SFP NXS line.
I also think that the SS and Bushnell HDMR FFP offerings, particularly the reticles offered in the HDMR, in the $1600 price range are going to hurt them more. Those are damned good FFP scopes for less money than a NF SFP. I said it in another thread, but right now I wouldn't trade my new SS 5-20 for any comparable NXS, and I run a NF 32BR on my F-TR rifle so it's not like I've never used a NF.

For extreme long distance shooting, I prefer FFP. The problem with nightforce is their FFP scope is too low power. We shoot at distances to about 2800yds and at that distance you have to have at least 20 power or more. When you have reticle on SFP, let`s say the 8x32 power and the power is set at 26 because of mirage, then the lines in the scope are not a true Mil apart. They make great scopes but I wish they would make their 5.5x22 FFP with a 34mm tube to have at least 30mil adjustment in turret.

We are getting a lot of guy that what to trad-in their used NF scopes so they can get a Hi-Speed & 0-Stop or just the Hi-Speed.
If they upgrade their old one it’s going to take months and hundreds of $$$ to do it so they opt to buy a new NF scope for a little more.

You know what, this has me thinking: about a month ago, I got the chance to shoot 7 rounds thru a McM TAC-50 topped with a NF 5.5-22x Mildot out to 1000 yards and it was decent. I wouldn't mind trying that scope for an entire shooting day if FFP were an option. Wonder if the sour taste is a result of the NF 2.5-10x, and my current want of variable 10x on 2 rifles.

You know what, this has me thinking: about a month ago, I got the chance to shoot 7 rounds thru a McM TAC-50 topped with a NF 5.5-22x Mildot out to 1000 yards and it was decent. I've always wanted an NXS 3-15 mil and don't care about ZS, HS or FFP since I'm just, and always will be, paper punching.
But was just never able to pony up the funds to get one with all the projects I got going on. Too bad companies don't offer more layaway options for those of us that choose to never use credit cards.

But why not just put money away yourself each month instead of making "payments"? I just don't get it.

I really like the NF HS & ZS options and have pretty much switched all mine over. I have mostly 5.5-22, along with one 3.5x15 and a 12-42 BR model. I have no issue with ranging because I know that the 5.5-22 reticle is matched for 22X. I also have no problem seeing the reticle at any power. That is my rub with FFP. They reticles get so small at lower power that I just can't see them well.

A lot of folks are realizing the advantages of first focal plane scopes. The F1 is staying but sold the 2 NF SFP 5.5-22x56's I had even though they are a great scope.
I kept my NF 2.5-10x24 because I don't like low power FFP scopes. </div></div>
But you know it's amazing that the Europeans have been offering FFP scopes as standard for years. I can't help wonder that the manufacturers are now charging a premium price for FFP scopes just because it is the fad.

I'm afraid there's too much competition for anyone to be able to just charge what they want. It's true that in Europe, scopes have traditionally been FFP, but the funny thing is that the current "fad" for hunting scopes in Europe is SFP. Besides that, a high zoom ratio tactical FFP scope is somewhat more of a design challenge than what was state of the art as a hunting scope 20 years ago.

There's no denying people are prepared to pay a premium for anything that is tacticool. S&B's Precision line of hunting scopes are a case in point, good magnification range, FFP, mildot reticle, side focus and yet they are a $1000 - 1500 cheaper than their police marksman line. Just an observation.

If that fits your needs, that's fine, but from an engineering point of view, it's a different animal than a tactical scope. If you want the capabilities of a modern tactical scope, you will have to pay for it, no matter the manufacturer.
