Looking for a new scope for my 300wm which will be mainly used for hunting, but also for weekend long range fun. Was curious if anyone has used this scope, specifically in the 5-20 power and what you think of it. Not sold on the "hunting" style turrets as compared to the "tactical" but willing to listen to thoughts. Other option would be the ATACR scope.

Thanks!

CJ,

The SHV was meant to be a more cost effective alternative to the NXS for shooters that did not want exposed tactical adjustments. The 5-20 does have a ZeroSet feature which allows you to set a point for you to return to zero, but it is far from the ZeroStop on the NXS.
It also has external illumination intensity adjustment for the center only illuminated reticle that is combined with the parallax adjustment (illuminated version only), it has a fast focus dipoter eyepiece, and an independent power zoom ring.

I don't think you will be able to discern a difference in glass quality.

The lenses are also not MIL-SPEC bonded like the NXS, ATACR, and BEAST.

My old man loved the glass in the NXS but wanted nothing to do with the exposed adjustments or the graduated reticles.

I bought him the 4-14 when it came out with an illuminated IHR and he loves it.

I'm about to buy one for my precision rig, and here are my reasons:

1. My rig is a .308 Model 700, with the AAC-SD barrel (18", threaded, 1:10 twist). It's a medium-range setup, 1000 yards and under. As such, a medium-range scope is appropriate. I don't need the Hubble telescope with a Secret-Squirrel reticle that can reach out to both coasts. Beyond 1000-1100 yards, the .308 is basically just a mortar anyway with respect to energy.

2. I want to use this rig for hunting and practicing mid-long range form. The turret setup and capabilities with this scope is more than adequate for that. In my mind, even snipers are hunting, just in a different form. If a 10x scope is adequate for a USMC sniper for similar configurations, clear glass that gathers tons of light and up to 14 or 20x is plenty for my purposes.

3. I like the mix of options and characteristics of this scope: 30mm tube, large 56mm objective that brings in tons of light, NF glass/clarity, workable reticle, illumination for the center component, dials I can work with, known durability and dependability/repeatability with NF turrets (as opposed to most set-it-and-forget-it quality that's just fine for most hunting scopes), reputation and customer service, warranty experience, and probably others I can't think of off the top of my head. I don't need ZeroStop or something like it because I'm not trying to shoot a quarter off the top of Alpha Centauri on a regular basis, nor do I use this rifle in order to keep someone else from using theirs on me (at least not yet). Most of my shots will be a quick spin or two, the shot, and quick spin or two back.

4. The price point for the features I need is very good, and I don't have to pay half again more for stuff I don't need. When I do my long-range rig, it'll likely be a different story, but for this rifle and its intended purposes, the SHV looks to be a perfect match. And I'm guessing that after studying their intended markets, they saw this demographic and took square aim at it with this new line on purpose.

I love their higher-end scopes, as well as other high-end known brands, but I don't have the funds to splurge on them, and I don't have an Operator jones going on, so I try to stick with purpose-appropriate options I can afford. I'm guessing NF did this line of scopes for people just like me.

Yep, I have one. Haven't used it much yet as I recently picked one up and did an initial zero but so far it's a pretty nice optic for it's intend purpose. I'll be using it mainly for coyote hunting this fall/winter. I have the MOAR reticle and love the 1moa hold over lines, the glass is very clear with repeatable turrets. So far I'm impressed.
