Hey guys I’m looking at these two scopes and want to have a reliable solid hunting scope 3-15 for the vx5 and 4/14 for the shv.... what do you think about these two scopes ? I know nightforce tends to be more reliable and leupold has a bit better glass

I had the same question.

If you go in knowing the SHV is not going to be the same rugged military optic that Nightforce is known for, they aren't that bad. Probably a little expensive for what they offer, but I still really liked my SHV F1 when I owned it. Compared to the VX-5, it really only offered two things over the Leupolds: FFP and Mil/Mil. That's it.

Basically if its going to be a tactical/hunting crossover rig, lean NF or maybe look at other options altogether. If hunting is the primary focus, I would lean Leupold or something like Vortex's LHT line.

I also own the SHV 4-14F1 and I actually really rate it. I have it sat on my Anschutz 1417 22 LR and it works perfectly. I like the illumination which on the moar Ret just lights up the centre cross which is perfect for hunting rabbits at dusk and dawn. The FFP reticle is also scaled just right. If I had one criticism of it would be the price (in the UK it is £1,300) which is a bit steep. I went for it as I got a very good discount which made it a similar price to a PST gen ii (I also have one of these and would rate the Shv as a step up). No experience of the vx5 but the SHV is a very solid hunting scope.
