I was looking for a scope for an AR for use in tactical rifle matches (out to 500y) and some 3 gun.

I was all set to do a 1.5-5 Leupy VX3, but when I called my pals at SportOptics, Jay talked me into trying the Nikon .223 with their one piece mount. I chose the 2X8 power.

It showed up and seems OK, but I'm reluctant to mount it (making it un-returnable) unless I'm sure I made a good decision.

Did I screw up? Should I send it back and get the Leupy?

I have the M223 2-8x32 w/BDC 600 reticle on my AR, but I put it in a Burris PEPR mount instead of the cheap looking Nikon mount. I can say that I am quite pleased with it. Very clear glass, precise movements. I haven't done any long range shooting with it yet, around 150 yds. or so is the farthest. But for what its worth, its a very good investment.

I too would have chosen the Nikon over the Leupold. I've never had a Nikon fail, and I've owned a couple. I'm not saying that they don't/can't fail occasionally, just that I've never had one fail. On the other hand, I've had 5 Leupolds and only ever used 3 of them and all 3 failed. Two failed to hold zero, and one of them had specs of dirt and floating around inside of it. I sold the other two without ever mounting them. Infact, I just bought another Nikon Monarch recently, that I haven't gotten yet, but since I have an identical one already, I'm sure I will like this one too.

nikon a Japanese company who has most tubes made in Philippines or Leupold who has 99 percent of product made here in usa hmmmmmmm i find it hard to believe out of 5 scopes 3 failed are you sure they wernt china knockoffs they do exist out there.

leupold is a first rate product, not that nikon is bad but i cant read a post that puts down leupold without calling bs!

slowrider if in fact you had soooo many failures did you give leupold opportunity to fix? their return policy is one of the best.

maybe you should talk to Lowlight and the guys at Rifles Only. They see Leupold scopes fail during every class.

I took my M223 out shooting Saturday for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised by it. There is a huge difference between it and my vortex as far as clarity, but there is a huge price difference as well.

It will work for a 223 that gets to hunt some and range fun every now and then.
