Rifle Scopes Nikon Optic Mounts

Does anyone have any firsthand experience successfully using mounts from one Nikon product line on another? Specifically, will an M-308 20MOA mount function as intended with later, P-308 series optics? I have seen/heard a ton of conjecture, but none of those anecdotes included anything to back up their assertions. Nikon helpfully refuses to comment on any inquiry regarding any non-sanctioned configuration.

Yes, I realize that they are physically compatible, etc. What I want to know is, given the spacing change along the axis of the bore and other minor variables (the sort that look close enough on the caliper, but not so much at range), will I get the full 20MOA, and will that change the math any (barring the obvious). My box of ‘nice Ideas’ out in the garage is fuller than I care to admit, and it’s the wrong time of year to hose a rifle for a lost cause. Any constructive data would be appreciated, particularly if it starts with “I tried that once, and...”

First hand with those exact products? No. But if the mount is tall enough for the objective to clear youre fine.

If your mount is canted 20 moa then it will always be 20 moa, doesnt matter if you mount it forward or rearward on the action or on the underside even for that matter.

If your scope has 100 moa of elevation that means you have 50 up and 50 down with a 0 cant base. Add in a 20 moa canted base and you will just shift your zero so that you would have 70 up and 30 down available to dial in the scope. Basically you shift 20 moa from the useless underside and make it available to dial up with.
 
I do some freelance PR/Shooting Event's for Nikon and I can assure you that you will not have any issues using the M-308 20 MOA mount with any Nikon scopes that will fit between the rings. I think there is probably only one scope that will not fit that mount and that is the P-223 3X carbine scope. The piuc beloe shows you a M-223 XR ( same mount as the M-308) and a Nikon P-223 4-12 BDC scope. We were smoking 8 inch steel at 500 yards with this combo. I hope this helps answer your question?

Happy my input could help. I don't do any sales for Nikon so passing along my true hands on experiences is a easy. I do not think you will have any trouble meeting your expectaion's. I hope you'll post some pics and range report too.

First things first...I did not intend to snub spife's reply, so I should have acknowledged it sooner. For whatever it may be worth, I actually do understand the physics behind a 20MOA base; however, I have also seen the occasional case at the range (typically involving components unintended for use with one another) where the cant unintentionally brings the barrel into the FOV. The unrepentant among them will, in lieu of correction, simply just not use the obstructed portion – thereby reducing their effective range. As you correctly stated, there must be adequate clearance, and this was indeed the very root of my inquiry.

As far as your request goes, Bart, that may require a bit of time. I have yet to receive the new base, and once it materializes, I will need to mount, reset zero, etc. That said, I do have some ‘before’ shots I can post if you like. There are undoubtedly fancier options in the market, but this one gets the job done. At my last outing, accuracy averaged 0.7417 MOA and went 5 for 5 on golf balls teed up near the 250yd marker. Performance like this is why I am interested in going for a bit more reach.
