Rifle Scopes Noob needs help with my NF scope

I'm a noob to precision shooting and need some help. I recently bought a NF 5.5-22x50 scope with the MLR reticle. I bought it second hand, and the previous owner said it was new...he did mount it, but never shot it. I've bought several items from this guy before so I have no reason to doubt him. (The reason I add this comment is that I'm assuming I'm starting with the factory settings.)

I mounted the scope on my Savage 10FP in .308 and went to the range last weekend. It was on paper @ 100 yards with the first shot...without bore sighting. After several rounds, elevation was dead on. Unfortunately, I didn't make note of where the top turret was before I started, but I **think** had to add about 8 clicks up to get it centered. This is where the top turret is now:

I know I can remove the set screw to move the turret over one notch so that the 0 is lined up, but shouldn't the bottom of the turret be even with the "1" if it's zeroed @ 100 yards? I assume that each number is a multiple of 100 yards.

No, not on 1 for 100. That's just the number of complete turns up from the very bottom of adjustment. Put it on the "0" and note that it's on the 5th turn up. That's your zero.

see i get that. but since you wouldnt have to drop 5 turns from a 100 yard zero that seems like a waste of the 5 revolutions. but zero is zero and the cap goes on how it goes on, you cant make it go down any further.

You can if you use a base with more MOA like a 40 MOA base.

The marks only indicate the number of turns, not yardage.

The relevant question is whether you have enough elevation to shoot as far as you intend to with your load.

If you have 4 complete turns of elevation plus about 5 minuts in the "UP" direction from your 100 yard zero, that's 45 MOA, which will likely get you as far as you're going to shoot a .308.

When checking that travel, look through the scope to make sure the reticle is actually moving. Some scopes will reach the limit of travel, but the knob will keep turning.

If the travel reaches its limit before you have enough elevation, then you might want to consider a base with more slant, as Rob suggested.

yeah, i just meant as is you cant force the knob to be down any farther. its up and zeroed, its where its supposed to be. just that you wont be shooting and anything under 100 yards usually so all that adjustment (only 5 turns) is kinda lost

Yes and that is why you use a 40 MOA base and the MOA below where he is now is transfered to the top end and he has more up elevation than down.

Thanks for the info guys, I have a better understanding now. The base I went with in the EGW 0 MOA. The range that I'm a member at has a max of 300 yards. However, there are some in the Houston area that go out to 1k yards. I didn't plan to go out that far, so I went with the 0 MOA base, but based on the responses, now I'm thinking I should have at least gone with the 20MOA one.

I always recommend going with a 20 MOA base if your scope will allow it and that one does. You should still have plenty of elevation to reach 1000 as that scope has 100 MOA of elevation but it will be near the top of it's travel.

ok ill ride this thread. i used the same base on my 10fp, 0 MOA from EGW. my millett has 90 MOA ajdustment. how do i sit for 1000 yrd shooting?

You should be ok. A 175 SMK at 2700 will take around 36 MOA to get to 1K. You started out with 45 MOA of 'up', and used a little of that up getting zeroed. As long as everything is straight and didn't require much windage adjustment to get zeroed, you'll be able to get there, but won't have much, if any, windage available. You'll be very close to the edge, though.

cool deal. as of now i dont know of a range that long but i think there is one in the next state over, lol. i need a country friend with lotsa land i guess. i almost got the 20 MOA base. id hate to have to remount, but since its not zeroed, i think now may be the best time huh? hmmmm, anybody need a EGW base, lol

i use a plus 40 nf base on my 5r and have been to 1200 with some to spare
