I have found that changing out the RCBS primer anvil from small to large or vice versa is a bit of a PITA. I know there is a hole in the anvil to insert a paper clip to assist in this process but I still have to grab onto the primer anvil to get it started and the hole process of unscrewing the anvil out to take more time than i would like. Has anybody out there come up with a quicker way to do the process...Is there a better press to do the changeout? Thanks.

Re: Noob question on changing out RCBS primer anvils.

My primer setup is not the handjob. My primer setup is actually on the RCBS. It is a bar that goes back into the stack of primers then comes out and goes under the unprimed cartridge. You then mash the primer into place in the cartridge by using the handle on the press. On that bar is either a screwed in spring fed small primer holder or a large primer holder. But to change between the small vs. the large primer holder you have to unscrew the primer holder mechanism and it isn't so convenient. Everything is held in place by a spring, so you have to screw the primer holder in or out under spring pressure. That is the part of the whole deal that is the pain. Takes too long to unscrew the primer holder when you want to change between large to small primer or vice versa. It's a minor hassle but it gets old. I just wondered if someone had come up with a slicker way. Thanks for any advice out there.

The slicker way is to use a hand priming system separate from the Rock Chucker, with either a primer tray or APS strips. I never even hooked up that hokey piece of pot metal and spring to my rockchucker.

Got to agree with that! RCBS universal is the way to go for me.

I found a long time ago that ON MY RCBS RELOADER SPECIAL it was not necessary to change the primer anvils. Simply leave the large size installed and it works just as well with the small primers. PITA gone.

If I understand the problem, the simple way would be get a second arm and change out the entire assembly when necessary. RCBS may just send one to you for the asking.

I wouldn't feel comfortable with using the large tool for small primers. You want to be assured of the primer fully seating and your not having high primers.

I found that after a few dozen switches the thing started to loosen up. My solution was to spend 20 bucks and buy 2 primer arms. One stays setup in smalls, one stays setup in larges. I swap out the entire arm and it's just a finger tight 1/4-28 bolt at the pivot point. No tools, takes about 10s total
