First off... the only scope I have is a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x50mm. I'm now sorely tempted to buy a high end scope, but I'm trying to narrow it down based on my needs. (Blowing accurate holes into paper)
Is it just me, or do PH and S&B's reticle choices seem to be oriented towards tactical shooting? I'm sure their reticles are great for shooting man sized targets in rapid fashion, but what about for punching paper at long distances? It seems that having little hash marks/dots every .5 mils isn't as desirable as a mil-scale MPR with .25mils per hash/dot. (The MPR reticle is an available option for any USO SN-3)

Just reading various comparison tests, it seems people think S&B and PH optical clarity are superior to USO's. I haven't looked through any of these high end scopes, but is the difference really that noticeable? I actually like the look of the USO SN-3, but I am more concerned about the reticles.

On another note... I've looked at a Nightforce scope in person before. Couldn't get the opportunity to really check out the optics as it was in a small room. The knobs seemed to be a bit hard to dial and made me overshoot a few times.

Oh... and I've looked into Horus reticles... and while they seem like a cool idea, I'm not forking over $800 to get it on a PH or $400 on a USO considering how those companies are already having a tough time dealing with Horus.

Re: Noob questions about high end scopes/reticles

At the Houston scope meet, I've gotten the chance to look through the USO's, S&B, Hendsoldt, Leupys, etc.

If you consider the view through the USO to be Kate Hudson, the Hendsoldt would be Adriana Lima and the S&B would be Jessica Alba. It is that noticable....LOL.

If all you want to do is to blow accurate holes in paper, a high power target dot (Or mildot if you want ranging ability) would do. Look at the competition type scopes.

Umm...not sure where you are going with the rest of the stream of consciousness...

Re: Noob questions about high end scopes/reticles

PH has the XR reticle in the 5-25X which is very thin and good for target shooting as well the S&B has the P4F which is also thin and is good for that.

Nightforce reticles are very good too as they are the thinnest and most target shooters opt for the Second Focal Plane scopes of the NF type for the reasons you mentioned. Never had an issue with a NF turret being hard to turn, or forcing you pasted an adjustment as they are spaced pretty far apart compared to most scopes.

Re: Noob questions about high end scopes/reticles

Hmm... I guess Kate Hudson is incredibly hot in your eyes? If only you said Kate Beckinsale...

Ya, I plan on mostly using it to blast paper at far distances, because I don't want to hunt game at such long distancs. (I personally don't believe in taking such shots) Just that it seems easier with a reticle that utilizes .25mil increments to dial in corrections on a knob that is .10 mil for adjustments. Using a reticle, even if it's very fine, leaves more chance for the user to misjudge by 1-2 clicks.

Re: Noob questions about high end scopes/reticles

Actually the MPR reticle has hash marks at .2, .5 and .8 mils. This combination means the only 1/10th Mil you can't see with a defined stadia line is .1 and .9 (they are in the middle between 0 and .2 and .8 and 1.0

There are some other reticles at USO that may be more to your liking.

Let me know if I can help you out.

Cheers,
