Hello All,

I have been visiting this forum now for a couple weeks and decided to join today. There seems to be a lot of good folks here with a lot of knowledge.

I'll admit, other than white tail hunting in Florida and some Elk hunting in Colorado, I don't have any other experience or formal training in long range shooting. I do compete competitively in PPC and IPSC which coincidentally is the reason I am seeking knowledge.

I recently won a "SAOD" .223 billet target/varmint upper at a PPC match. From the preliminary research I have done SAOD seems to make a high quality upper, but there doesn't seem to be much independent info reviewing SAOD. Does anyone have any experience with this upper or SAOD? Is the .223 round even really worthy of a build for long range shooting? Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Noobie--with questions

Thats a very good upper, a 24 inch barreled upper made with a Lothar Walther barrel with a 1 in 8 twist, should work very well with heavier bullets such as BH 75 or 77 grain ammo.

Welcome to the Hide.

As far as the .223 for long range usage, it's not bad but it depends on your application. Ringing steel and punching paper out to 800yds is more than feasible, especially with a 24" barreled upper. There's better calibers out there, but for the money the .223 is one of the cheapest ways of getting into LR shooting when you don't reload. Ammo is abundant and I recommend this vendor for match ammo at a great price:

Another benefit of .223 is it will force you to learn wind calling. This makes it less than ideal for competition use, but it is a definite bonus for starting out and learning the ropes. Bottom line... build that sucker with a good trigger and welcome to a new (and expensively addictive) hobby.

Re: Noobie--with questions

I shoot the 77 gr SMK and it seems to buck the wind well out to 500 but after that, hold on and enjoy the ride! I would rephrase it to medium range as opposed to long range. After 800, the .223 loses steam pretty fast. Hits on paper(or humans) would be sufficient, but any 4 legged type might not be an ethical shot at those distances. Just my .02

As I saw it put the other day.

"Welcome to the most expensive free site you've ever been on"

This place is a great place to learn about LR shooting but hold on to you wallet and watch out.

Also hopefully you either have a very understanding wife or arn't married because this site may cause divorces.

Oh and welcome, also remember you need thick skin to survive around here.

Re: Noobie--with questions

Thx for all the responses, and I appreciate the ammo advice. At least for now, I plan on swapping back and forth the lower I have on second complete AR system. It is a heavy barreled Delton with an Adams Armament Piston system and a Aimpoint up top.

I always thought the .223 round was only effective to about 600 yards, but with an 800 yard effective range I would be willing to put forth some $$$ for the build.

So I guess now I need some glass:)

LOL, yeah I am married. Shooting is my only vice so I don't get much grief from the wife. It's is either guns or drugs, hookers, and booze

Come to the Dark Side, I mean Snipers Hide, Luke.

Be prepared to spend thousands.

The up side compared to booze, blow and whores, is that in the morning, you still have something to show for it.

And so it begins.
