I have to be missing something, lol. Had my mind set on a tikka t3x CTR in 223 for my kids to shoot. Come to find out, they’re no longer available in the US. I’m too OCD to buy used. Looking for something with a heavy barrel as they like to shoot. This will be for target shooting only. I’m afraid the thin barrel of the tikka t3x lite. Will heat up quickly with them shooting it back to back. Looking to stay at $1000 or less. Checked out savage, tikka, bergara. Not sure about the qc on the new REM 700’s. I have a few older ones that rock but, they’re probably 20+ years old. There just not many options with a heavy barrel in that price point. Is there something else out there I should be looking at. Not having much luck.

CZ600 "Range" Model. I have the 308 version and 5 shot groups sub 0.5moa are very common.

You can surf the internet for a used one for your price range, or you can enjoy the journey of putting together your own .223 heavy-barreled trainer. More than your budget for sure, but if you pay as you go it is manageable. Bonus that there are no personal compromises if you do it the latter way.

I reused an old 700 action for mine. It wears a 26" Krieger heavy varmint, and is a joy to shoot.

Rebarrel a factory tikka with something heavy? Although that probably forces you to a new stock as well

Its a great choice. Factory threaded barrel. 2 stage trigger. Add in a KRG Bravo and you're set
Have the Super Varmint in 6.5 Creedmoor. Absolutely love it. VERY accurate rifle when I do what I’m supposed to do. Highly recommend. I’m no rifle stock expert, but the Roughtech on the SV certainly hasn’t seemed to be a hindrance at the range.

I have the howa 223 #6 barrel put it in b&c stock absolutely love it. One nice feature of howa is they come suppressor ready. Also check the savage 10/110 223. Mine has 26" bull barrel but it's a 10 lbs rifle before optics, but an excellent bench rifle.
I have a Savage 110 Storm in .223. It’s a hunting rifle in all respects but with a heavy barrel I’m certain it would be a very good bench gun. Maybe I’m just lucky but my 110 has a VERY smooth action, at least as good as the one in my Tikka T3X Super Varmint ( I know, I was stunned) ,which has an excellent action, typical of Tikka.

I’m sure this is against everything on the hide but, ended up ordering a new REM 700 tactical in 223. Pretty much fits the bill and I’ve read the newer seems to be a lot better in quality than the previous few years. Heavy barrel, timney trigger, 16.5” barrel should keep it somewhat light for the kids to shoot. It was also under budget at less than $800. As they get older and hopefully more into it, I can always change out the stock.

Good luck, I am looking forward to hearing your experiences.

Do come back and report. Need first hand reports on “ new “ Remingtons rather than just suppositions that they MUST be bad.

This looks pretty seeet, been eyeballing it for a few days now & I’m getting weak…
If these Roughtech stocks are the same as the one on my Super Varmint, they certainly seem to be substantial enough for most purposes. How they compare to the older “ standard “ Tikka synthetic stocks, I can’t say.

Have you looked at the Bergara B-14 HMR in .223? It might be a bit over your $1000 budget, but it's got a great reputation for accuracy and a solid, heavy barrel. Otherwise, maybe check out some of the Savage models with heavy barrels

I’ll definitely report back once I get my hands on it. I did check out the bergara as well. I’ve read good and bad on those as well. Same with the Remington but, some of the newer reviews were actually pretty good so decided to take a chance. Thanks for all the suggestions. Would have loved to get the tikka CTR in 223 but, they not available anymore.

I also just received a new 700 Long Range in 308. So far so good. Seems like there are some old stock floating around so you gotta be careful and make sure you're getting one from the new Georgia plant. The only issue so far with mine is one of the scope base thread holes in the receiver had crappy threads. Hitting a 6" square steel at 330 yards everytime with cheap 150gr FMJ.

I had one that I dropped into a bravo, the stock that came on the rifle was pretty terrible. Added a Badger 20 MOA rail & it shot well, ended up selling it to a guy on another forum though.

@berry79 if you pickup a donor with a 223 bolt face we can make you just about anything you want in that barrel spec. We can also build you a barreled action. josh at patriotvalleyarms.com
I have onefor sale that Josh did for me not long ago. Remy stainless action and 26" Osprey barrel. It shoots sub .5 moa, just more than I want to carry around. If you can stretch your budget a it,Im asking $1500 for the barreled action and 200 for the installed Hit trigger. I have a Magpul stock that I would include for a reasonable amt.
