So I'm thinking about finally scratching the AR itch, and I'd like to start out with a good basic rifle that I can possibly upgrade in the future. I've been looking at the Noveske basic rifle and it looks like a decent package that won't break the bank. Do you guys think this is a good starting point, or is there something else I should be looking at that is as good or better at a similar or cheaper price point? The basic noveske rifles look to run about $1500.

Re: Noveske N4 16" 5.56mm Light Recce Basic Rifle

Noveske is high quality, accurate and hardly a basic rifle. My 12.5" stainless Rogue Hunter is the most accurate AR I own. Shot 1200 over a 3day course without a hiccup. If you can afford it, you won't regret it.

Re: Noveske N4 16" 5.56mm Light Recce Basic Rifle

Just to clarify, when I say basic I'm just referring to no bells and whistles. I figured Noveske was a quality choice, and wanted to hear if there was any reason to choose differently. Thanks for the quick response chalwie. I'm looking to have a solid accurate rifle, but it doesn't have to be exactly match grade. Will the chrome lined hammer forged barrels be fine for sub moa accuracy, or do I really need to look at the stainless barrels?

Re: Noveske N4 16" 5.56mm Light Recce Basic Rifle

I've got a 14.5" mid gas Afghan that is the awesomeness.

I upgraded from a Bushy Carbine and will never go back to a "stock" build.

They are pricey, and there are those that will argue that you can put together something just as nice for less, but you will not find too many arguments that there are better options.

Noveske puts a really fantastic rifle together.

The basic is a good rifle for the price. If you plan replace the HG later, just keep in mind they pin their FSB .

If you have the money and Noveske offers the configuration you want, I would just get it the way you want from the start. They can change a few of the build specs so it doesnt hurt to call and if you dont see it offered on their website.

Re: Noveske N4 16" 5.56mm Light Recce Basic Rifle

Noveske is very flexible in their builds. Basically, if they have the parts they will put together whatever configuration you want.

Also, every gun I have owned from Noveske has shot sub MOA even my chrome lined basic guns. You really can't go wrong with one.

Re: Noveske N4 16" 5.56mm Light Recce Basic Rifle

Love my crazy accurate 6.8SBR's.
After seeing them shoot, a buddy ordered a 14.5 556 Afghan. It would not shoot better than 1 3/4" groups @ 100. Sent it back, and they replaced his bbl, no muss or fuss.
Call Ms Sheri or the other young lady there - they'll set your build up just the way you want it. Painless to deal with those folks. Wish every business I dealt with ran like that.

My 2cents = if you don't mind spending 2k+ I'd get a noveske stainless recce type build in a heartbeat but if money is a concern build it yourself/have a smith do it for you as you can have what is functionally the same thing for probably 1200.

This is true, especially if you order your barrel with a headspaced bolt. After you do it once, you can put one of these guns together after supper.

Re: Noveske N4 16" 5.56mm Light Recce Basic Rifle

I'd like to keep it to $1500 or less, as this is my first AR. I figured with the basic rifle I could get a very accurate and reliable package that I could upgrade in the future if I so choose. I also like the idea of the durability and lifespan of chrome lined barrels, and since I am being told I should be able to get very close to if not sub moa accuracy out of the noveske chrome lined barrels that is perfectly sufficient for me. I'm just looking to get a high quality working gun that I can beat the crap out of and still be pretty accurate. BCP, how would you recommend going with what you described? $1200 sounds appealing, I'm just curious what kind of components would go into such a build.

Re: Noveske N4 16" 5.56mm Light Recce Basic Rifle

Only problem with custom builds pieced together with different components is the resale value. I oftensee franken-guns in the for sale sections that only bring in a fraction of what they cost to assemble.

Local shop:

lower = 220something for 3 stripped aeroprecision
LPK minus trigger = 45$

JSE Surplus:

A4 upper, M4 cuts (has a del-ton mark on it if that bothers you rainier has nice uppers for 120$) = 100
YHM customizable rifle-length handguards = 105
Magpul CTR, buffer, tube, spring, plate, = 140?
YHM gas block = 30$
Gas tube, pin, = 12?
YHM flash hider = 25?

Rainier:

CMT bolt MPI/HP = 130 (if they have their thunder bolt in that would be 1st choice)
Rainier 16" ultra match barrel = 365

Ebay:

magpul flip ups for 83$
magpul MIAD grip in the mail 34$ (fat hands don't like A2 grip)

Already had a 2 stage RRA trigger for it and a caldwell bipod.

In retrospect I should have spent another 50$ on midwest or troy they are just better but otherwise I'm happy with it. Shoots great.

I actually just got back from shooting so I'll post pics in a min.

Yeah it's definitely a labor of love...

edit: a good middle ground would be a lower assembled by you + an upper built by a good smith or company.

+1 If something were to go wrong with the lower receiver it would likely not be catastrophic.

Re: Noveske N4 16" 5.56mm Light Recce Basic Rifle

Only problem I ever had with a lower was one that had too much finish/anodizing on the magwell inside that made mags not fit right. Beer+dremel for that. Uppers can be out of spec, happens a lot and you won't notice until it's too late if you aren't looking for it. Things like handguards not going on straight no matter what you do, crooked barrels. Checking headspace is pretty easy but if you don't know what that is (or are in the "ARs headspace themselves" camp) you can have problems.

Having someone else assemble the upper for you is peace of mind.

BCM has 16" stainless "recce" uppers in stock right now with daniel defense lite rifle-length handguards. 875 w/o BCG so probably 1050 complete, shipped which means you are paying someone 75$ to put it together for you. That upper + a lower with a good stock and trigger would be a very smart rifle and serve you well not matter how you choose to use it.
