NRL22 Scope Settings

I'm so excited y'all. We're finally getting a sanctioned NRL22 club with matches in the state of Alabama!

So, having said that, I've got scope questions. Up to this point, I've been shooting 22lr matches with a minimum distance of 50 yards. So as a result, I've zeroed my scope at 50 yards and set the zero stop at 50 yards. No problems. Since targets in NRL22 matches tend to be less than 50 yards, how do you guys handle this?

What do you zero at?
Do you use a zero stop?
If the target is less than 50 yards and you're zeroed at 50, do you hold under?
What have you found that works best for you?

Generally on all my Scopes I'll leave .5 mils or so past the zero stop. In case I switch ammo or am shooting somewhere with different elevation, etc..

I zero at 50 yards, yes I have zero stop and I really like it on my 22. With the targets at different yardages on the same stage it's nice to have zero stop just in case, especially when you are going past a full rotation.

My 25 and 50 are different. I’ve been using but I am swapping to 25 because the smallest targets where I shoot are at 25. And, a 25 yard zero will not affect how far out I can dial.

The official monthly COF for NRL22 is limited to 100yards. But many/most clubs have add-on targets that go out to the range limits - as mentioned above 2-400 yards.

The idea of NRL22 limiting COF to 100 yards is due to not all ranges have access to extended yardages, but nearly all have a 100 yard range, is my understanding.

As far as a 0, my 50yard 0 is so close to 25 that it works for the closer targets.

Eoddave27 what are you using for a scope base, is it 15 moa, 25, or the 30moa and what scope to get that much swing in in your turret. Just wondering cause I’m in the process of put a cz457 together now. And I really can’t seem to decide what I’m needing for a riser.

I have a 25 MOA base and a Sig Tango 6 4-24x50 on it. I’m able to dial out to 400 yards with that which is about 21 mils for me. I had an optic with a 30mm tube before the Tango 6 and could dial out to 300 which is 14 mils for me. I would just hold over using my reticle to get to 400. I just switched my optic from a 30mm tube to the 34mm and don’t have a photo of the new set up. I will get some this evening and post it.

Here is my rifle and my sons. Both are Tikka T1x’s in a KRG Bravo. Mine (the green one has a 25 moa rail and a Sig Tango 6 4-24 x 50. You can’t tell n the photo but I have about 1/8” between the bell of the scope with the caps on and the barrel. If I get a heavier barrel I will need a higher set of rings. His has a Tract Toric HD 4-20x50 on it again with a 25 MOA rail.

I am zeroed at 50y, I hold under for closer. I have enough elevation in my Covenant7 to dial 350y, so far.

Nice wood shop you have there! Those rifles are nice, as well. I'd sure like to see my local range delve into the NRL22 stuff. It looks like it would be fun as well as less expensive practice for the larger caliber shooting.

I use 50 because it's close enough. Figure it out for yourself is the only real answer though.

I just shot my first NRL22 match earlier this month.

I zeroed my rifle at 25 yards and dialed for each range. Everything worked fine except for one stage, where I took my time...and about a second too long, which cost me the last target.

I knew better than to dial between 25 and 50, but wanted to make sure I got solid hits at each distance...I won't make that mistake again...

Zero at 50 and hold under at 25 if needed. If you have a reticle that has hash marks going up, this is not a problem.

I zero at 50 yards and either hold under or dial down a couple of tenths, depending on how the stage is set up. On my scopes with zero stops, I leave myself about 5 tenths below zero for this reason.

I zero at 50, but I have my zero stop set at -.5mil so I can dial -.2 mil for a 30 yard target. I'm using a Convenant 7 FFP mil-mil scope.

I stumbled on this thread in a search and thought I would share that there is a match at Cavern Cove on the third Sunday of the month.

If your scope height is 2” and you are shooting target ammo with a MV around 1050 your 25 and 50 yd are the same. I wouldn’t zero a rim fire any further back than that. Just know your dope for longer ranges. If your scope is lower it’s different.

JBM has Eley target ammo in the library of bullets. Works for me w/i about .1 mil

If your 25 and 50 are the same then you are about 1/4 inch high at most at 35 yds. Hold center.

Make sure your parallax will adjust down to at lease 25 yards. My zero stop allows I believe 0.5 mil below zero. That's plenty if you need to dial anything under 50 yards. Usually 0.1 mil if anything. If the target is generous enough size just hold 50 yard zero. You can always hold under if you can't dial below your stop. At that distance even on a small target, a bottom edge hold will probably work.
