I have a 3rd gen rifle scope and laser illuminator that works great. The problem that I have is the rifle/scope combo is heavy and cumbersome to use to scan out from or navigating to a blind. So I'm thinking about purchasing a first generation monocular to fill in the gap. Ideally, I would like to be able to detect (maybe not identify) hog or deer size animals at 100 yards. I could then raise the 3rd gen scope. I know I will have to couple the first gen with an IR illuminator. Any thoughts? Models to recommend? Or should I suck it up and wait until I can buy a quality PVS 14 or similar?

We always try to tell all to save for at least a Gen 2 device. In your case, already owning a G3 rifle scope and then to look through a Gen 1 would SEVERELY disappoint you.

I can predict you would think you wasted your hard earned dollar no matter how much you spent.

The Gen 2 D-300 comes to mind, but prices have been soaring from 1k - $1900 in just a year and a half due to supply and demand of the surplus US Gen 2 tubes the Israelis bought up in the 80s' ...These tubes are now getting low in supply.
