I just got a $200 gift certificate for some Oakley sunglasses from a former coworker of mine. I plan to buy some for shooting, My question to you guys is which model should I get? Should I get polarized lenses? All suggestions are welcomed, Thanks

Re: Oakleys

I like the polarized but I wear them all the time and I fish a lot when I am not shooting. I would go to a sunglass shop and try some on before you order. I run M frames and Radar Range glasses when I shoot and love both of them but the Radar's I feel are more comfortable when worn with muffs compared to my M frames.

I had half jackets for awhile but they just looked to small on my face.

I'm going with Radars with the range shape lens. Does the hump on the frame with the hole on it create your muffs from creating a tight seal to your head? Should I go with the straight frame?

Re: Oakleys

I use a pair of polarized flak jackets for shooting. It helps to reduce the glare and isn't overly dark so i can easily see my front sight even if I'm using the tungsten shade lenses. The lenses are easy to swap out so you can change them to whatever suits your needs.

Re: Oakleys

I run a set of Pro M frames and can't complain. They give a wider field of view and better protection that the Half Jackets.

My day to day glasses are the Radars with polarized lenses. I definitely agree that the polarized lenses are a plus but the amber lenses with some kind of iridium reflector help with identification of targets. When I shoot IDPA, 3-gun, or trap; I like to run with the amber lenses since they add quite a bit of contrast but aren't as dark as the polarized (even though they are not that dark as BoredEngineer said).

Good luck with the search! You can't go wrong with Oakleys in general. Just be sure they have a good field of view. Again, I definitely would not recommend the Half Jackets.

Re: Oakleys

I used to use my half jackets till my contacts started bothering me...now i have a set of prescription nanowire 2.0. I am however planning on getting some prescription lenses for my half jackets.

Re: Oakleys

I've gone through multiple pairs of M frames over the years and the Radar. For shooting I generally ended up with the G30 or VR28 lens which are for high contrast situations like golf, getting good edge contrast of targets, etc.
While polarized lenses are never a bad thing and are absolutely required for fishing, I never found it a must for shooting. That's the great thing about Oakleys and other brands like RudyProject, get different lenses for different conditions & sports. I have vented lenses for my cardo sports like running & cycling (really help with fogging when sweating like a pig).

Half Jackets were too small for my face as well.

But, about a year ago I switched to the current Jawbone. They're more current from a style perspective -- eye of the beholder obviously. What's really an improvement with the Jawbone for shooting is how easy it is to switch the lenses. It's typical for me to switch during a match, e.g., G30s for bright Colorado sun and then shoot an indoor stage where I switch to clear lenses. It was always a pain with M frames and the Radar.
I consider a set of clear lenses a must for when conditions dictate. Downside is it'll be hard to get Jawbones at any kind of discount because they're the new, hot design. Oakley protects its brand and channels pretty religiously. The $200 certificate will get you most of the way but not all. Check out their website (www.oakley.com) -- it's good for seeing what's available.

I also notice that when shooting LR rifle through a 3-15x or larger scope, the higher light transmission filtering lenses (e.g., Fire Iridium or Black Iridium) are blocking too much light. Another reason why I stay with G30/VR28 for shooting.

Re: Oakleys

No matter what frame you choose, be sure to buy the black iridium polarized lenses. Looking through them is like looking at the world in high definition. They are definately worth the extra money.

I have 2 pairs of the Radar Range and don't have any issues with not getting a good fit with my muffs. Both have the hole in the side where they fold.

I will be going with the radar range with black iridium polarized lenses and an extra set of the clear lenses in case its a dark overcast day at the range. Thanks again guys!

Re: Oakleys

I run half jackets with the XLJ lens black iridium with my RX ... Im thinking about getting some RX red lenses since they seem to make thing pop much better.

Downside to getting RX lenses ... they aint cheap!!

Re: Oakleys

If I can offer a note on that "ballistic" rating - don´t unnecessarily go with more expensive models. They do mark some as such, but it´s more a function of the coloring being suitable for shooting that dictates that. As far as the impact resistance goes, ALL Oakleys are made to the same standard.
BTW my choice are Racing Jackets with photochromatic lenses. Great shades for any conditions.

Re: Oakleys

If you can sign up with Oakley SI and look through the selection there. I've bought a lot through the site, especially spare lenses. There is quite a difference in pricing.

I'm tough on glasses so when ever I can save money I do.

That's what I wear when I'm driving or out pimpin,.. Shooting I wear the M frames and switch between clear & dark as needed,. I would love to get amber or yellow for those someday.
