Re: OAL for 700 SPS 308
2.815-2.825 seems to be the magic range for both my Remington varmint and tactical 308 rifles with Berger 168 VLD’s as well as 168, 175 and 180 grain SMK's. I have tried them longer using the AICS mags but keep coming back those OAL’s.
In the tactical my go to load for 175's is Winchester brass and primmer, 44.5 grains of varget with the bullet seated to 2.825" this gives me 2550fps and typically prints under 1/2 moa at 100y and I have a pic somewhere of 4 inches at 700y. 168 smks are the same except ~45.5 grains of varget and I believe those where flying around 2610fps and my hunting load is a 168 Berger VLD @ 2.815" with varget at 45.9 grains and gave 2640 fps.
By far the most accurate bullet I have shot in the tactical at 100 yards was the 180 smk. I lucked into a box of 100 on a combined bullet sale on a forum, otherwise I would not have tried them. Those shot several groups of 5 into the high .2’s to low .4’s, I think my powder charge was around 44 grains but it has been awhile since I loaded them.
As always work into to these as components vary and all of these are near the top of the suggested load data from Hodgdon.
