More like Praetorian Guard. SS and NkVD were intensely loyal. At least after the Night of the Long knives… when The Brownshirts dissolved mysteriously.
Praetorian Guard were about enriching themselves and whoever made the best deal with them… while the other guy got whacked. Often by the Praetorian Guard!!
Read how corrupt they were in the decay that became Rome… which they contributed to by pitting corrupt leaders in as Emperors.
Constantine got rid of them and IIRC replaced them with Viking mercenaries at Constantinople. Who were supremely good fighters and totally loyal.
Hummmmmm…. Night of the Long knives? Replacement with warriors from the North country? The Russ (reds… as the Norse were called) were an effective part of the creation of the new Christian Roman Empire which arguably lasted a lot longer than Rome itself. From 330’s to either 900ish… or 1880is you can argue… and vestiges remain today.
