Obsession/disorder?

I buy guns.
I buy guns I rarely shoot – if ever.

I think I've narrowed it down to, well, perhaps OCD.

I just love mechanical devices that are built and function flawlessly, hence the reason for my eclectic collection.

Anyone else infected with this disease?

By the way I do shoot all the time but only a few guns get used, the rest are for me to look at with glass of single malt in hand.

Yeah and its getting worse. I used to be happy with a factory Rem 700 and a cheap scope!!!

The OCD doesn't help with the latest greatest.

lol i have a variation of this.. i buy guns and shoot them alot.. i always think about going shooting.. and when i come home from shooting i think of the next time i get to go shooting!! its a vicious cycle

Apparently not many folks here on "the hide" have contracted this addiction. Good for you, it’s expensive and can lead to marital conflict.

I love to bring home really nice OM Ruger Flattops, clean em up, fondle em, then put it in the safe with all the rest of them. Maybe someday I'll get the market cornered on them!

the truth is spoken..always a tuff time explaining to the wife why you need a 2k rifle that she thinks is just like the ones you have...but there is an answer..every once and a while let her go to the coach store and get yet another purse that is silly. lol

These parts of the condition are hard not to have. Watches, guns, machines- it's easy to like a well manufactured item.

that is why I started coming to this website in the first place because I found other people that had the same issues as me -
gunbuyingitis - it is clinical check it out

I have to say you are living in the wrong state for that OCD issue.

There is no known cure.
You just have to deal with it.
I started trying to build up by selling some of my mediocre guns to fund building some keepers. Problem is when you look in the safe to sell some all of the sudden there all keepers. Hard to part with any. They all have a way of making you want to justify keeping them. One of the better diseases I guess...

In my house the wife doesn't understand all the brass, bullets, powder, primers, dry fire, new stocks for Xmas, art of the precision rifle, blah, blah,blah.

So one day she said something to the youngest about always doing something with guns.....He simply replied, "mom, it is like Coach for men. You just won't understand.". It stuck, and that is the phrase around here now.

One year, in an effort to find the perfect one, my wife bought five vacuum cleaners. I bought five (at least) guns. I know which one of us got the best deal.
I cannot come to this site without checking out the Classifieds, ever.
Many of you know me well. I have bought multiple items from some of you.
I've sold a few, but only to fund even nicer ones.
I will not even begin to talk about the reloading components and tools amassed over the last 35 years.

Thing is, though, I don't think there is anything wrong with me at all.

This is great!

My latest offence was buying a Winchester lever action in 30-30. I just liked it. I've put five rounds through it just to see how accurate it was. 1.5" group at 100 yards with open sights - not bad! Regardless this thing most likely will become a safe queen. That was money well spent.

I was going to post early this morning but didn't think the thread was going to get much response, given the fact all of us here are afflicted with it.
My wife just gift wrapped a NIB Win 9422 for a 5&1/2 year old son of young friends of ours. It has been patiently waiting in my safe for the perfect occasion for 3 years.
So mine's even worse than most.

It's OK to buy/build 'em, but you need to get out and shoot.

As for the wife, suggest having rifles built with the same basic configuration (camo colors, stock, DBM, scope, bipod, etc.) maybe you could convince her that it's the same rifle that she sees you carry to/from the truck each time. (Oh that thing? Yeah I've had that one for awhile.)

I've recently been bitten by the bug myself. I'm not sure why but firearms are fascinating to me. I don't see too many marital problems in the future because my GF gets pissed if I don't take her to the range. I gave her a taste of it and now shes getting hooked.

I totally agree. I love to shoot all of them but when you've been "collecting" for as long as I have it starts to become a logistical problem. I actually like to call it a “high class” problem.

THe bad part about the obsession is that the more precision rifles you have, the more you want. There is something VERY addicting about hitting a MOA sized target out to 1k+.

And its not just the rifle, the components are just as bad.

And safe queens arent bad if you can afford them. I think the showroom quality classics like a '68 Shelby GT500KR would be a waste, but those people have the money to spare.

Yeah, it can become a problem alright (IMO).

Confess that I used to collect Colts, various configurations, some NIB, etc., also Winchester lever rifles and a few other pieces that I'd never take out and use.

But, I quit doing that back in the late '90s since it really didn't make much sense to keep a personal "museum".

Decided that I'd rather focus on stuff to use instead of stuff to look at.

Matter of personal preference....

Well, at first read I'd say I was in this category, but on thinking about it - nope. I buy firearms and they all get used. I don't mind scratches on them - as they are proof marks that I've almost mastered them (the almost part gets me up off my lazy butt and to the range every week to try to get rid of that word).

In every other respect - yep. I'm just like you. My eyes are way bigger than my wallet though....

Same here, cant get enough shooting in and yes at least once a week or every two weeks if I am busy with work. Its so bad that my co-workers call me tackleberry lol. I am allways working OT for gun money. The sad thing is they should be shooting more often than they do. The wife just shakes her head but she cant say anything she likes coach purses an awfull lot.

For me I think it's that I don't get to shoot often. So I spend my time dreaming about shooting and looking at the various configurations of rifles.

My variation of the disease also includes the rifle and shooting accessories. After all, each rifle needs its own bipod, data book, shooting mat, etc.

My neighbor has that problem but his wife is not aware. When he leaves the house with one gun it is always in a two gun case that way when he brings home two and she does not know.
