I mean, my tax dollars aren't there to pay for someone else's lawn care.
Unless theyve literally solved all the unsolved crimes in RI, maybe try doing the job we pay you to do.

Although I agree we, aren't paying them to mow lawns, it isn't like he spends 40 hours a work being somebody's personal lawn attendant.
Good for him.
The PR value of what he did will do far more good for the department than the “cost” to the city in perps not arrested for a new minutes.
Protect and Serve. Serve. It’s why you stop and help a kid with a broken bicycle. Or shoot some hoops for a few minutes. Or talk with the hunters about the buck in their truck and hear the story of how they got it. Or help a senior Citizen carry groceries into the house. Or go BUY some groceries out of your own pocket for someone having a bad spell.
Those are parts of the job, too. And are far more important than an extra few minutes of running radar.

I get it man I do.....but on the flip side, imagine you just had your house broken into, or your kid is missing, and you turn on the news and you see cops playing basketball or mowing lawns.....how much faith is that going to Instill in the police?
Frankly I don't think police ( or any state agency) should be filling the roll of family, the church, or neighbors to do community service
although i agree on the surface, i think there is something to be said about having cops "walk the beat"
he might not be doing police work while mowing a lawn but he has now spent more time in that neighborhood with a eye on possible issues etc
plus im guessing the neighbors or kids in the area may now believe that cops dont just show up to shoot someone, like the news says
cop cars are like air power...you can cause damage but you still need boots on the ground to hold it

the one that gets me is sitting looking for speeders. we know this is not about safety but about rev generation. I prefer local cops on bikes, riding neighborhoods and being part of the community. 7 on duty for a town of 60k with 4 of them sitting on highways looking for speeders is a total waste of what their intent is.
other than that, love seeing them playing with kids, being part of the community!!!!!

I barely believe in the idea of govts, but since they are a necessity, I feel they should be as minimal and efficient as possible...if you have money to pay officers to do "community service" instead of solving crimes, you have too much money, and are burdening the tax payers.
Using that same logic, what else can police do in the name of "PR"....community taxi service? Community grocery getters? Community maid service?....all tax payer funded?
Hell, you go to the DMV, do you want to be waiting for an additional 30 minutes because the employees are mowing lawns for PR?
Keep in mind several thing as well,
Simple traffic violations can lead to warrant, drug arrests, DUI etc
Also realize that many police departments have at least 1 grant position in relations to primary or secondary road patrol. Grants fund a specific traffic only car that doesn’t take complaints. The ones here are required to log time on these roadways the grants are funding them to be on. Be it paper log or gps in the cars computers. That’s Michigan tho

Some friends an I were shooting, A LOT. Literally 10-15 minutes of what sounded like a gunfight. We got done as as we were standing in the yard talking two patrols pulled into my driveway. My wife walked up to the first car and when he rolled his window down she told him that we were all out of donuts and coffee. His smile turned upside down. We eventually ended up BSing with them for a bit but in the beginning things were a little tense.
I take it you don't live in Newark? I would agree that in most suburban settings this is inappropriate, and a bad thing. I used to feel like you do, and I thought there was no reason for even automatic weapons, as suppressing fire is irresponsible in population. I've changed my mind.
Here in St. L the Michael Brown lie and resulting riots/destruction/normalization of blatant criminality are REALITY. To hold on to the same ideological opinions in the face of an opposing reality is stupid. Now I don't blame them one bit for wearing body armor and wanting tanks. It's clear to me they need MRAPs and crew serve weapons. We now have a prosecutor in the City of St. Louis who refuses to prosecute felonies, and even violent felonies. Crime is through the ceiling, and will continue to get worse for at least the next half decade. It is as if my city is committing suicide in public view.
All of you libertarian/anti-police ideologs are going to be touched (or clubbed) by this. Most likely it will be a lifechanging event from which you never fully recover even if it's you who has to defend yourself with lethal force because of the rampant lawlessness. If this isn't dealt with at the source it will come out and visit you where you think you're safe. Emboldening all the gangs and criminals will not be without dire consequences.
Sitting in a relatively safe suburb with outstanding police/fire/EMS who serve my city and who give and receive respect from the citizens is a far cry from North St. Louis MO, or Springfield-Belmont NJ.

In order for that to hold true, you'd have to look at the time he cut the grass, his area of operation, the call logs for that time frame/area and determine that someone's house was broken into or their kid kidnapped during that same time frame. If there were no calls for robberies, or kidnappings, at that time, in that area, then you can't hold him responsible for that. His presence in the neighborhood is deterring crime, so there's that.

Heck, though the cases are "real" I have been watching Adam 12 so granted it's not 100% the way things happened. Yesterday, they arrested somebody for running a stop sign with no license and outstanding tickets/missed trial dates. Old man, running flower stand. They helped him get his flowers to the place, then took him to jail. The man was not bitter, realizing they had helped him out and he was in wrong. Yes, I know...it's a TV show based off real events; but it's not too far off in some instances to how LE used to patrol when most folks knew the patrol officers in their AO.
This act makes the police look much better (IMO) in light of what is happening around the country today. Alas, he'll be fired because he did a good deed.
That's in Lakeland, Florida. Polk County has had that since I used to go to Sebring in the early 2000s. Aka... Sherriff Grady Judd.

this one pisses me off i was a cop in iowa for 27 years and if it was slow which after a snow storm it was had a number of elderly people in my area limited income and iowa winters are a bitch id stop and shovel their drives and side walks. one time one of my captains saw me and chewed me out said i couldnt do it, the lady whose sidewalk came out and tore him a new asshole i fell in love with my first senior she actualy called the local news and they did a story on it made .an enemey out of the captain and after that id call out on my breaks and shovel . moral of story most supervisors are ass kissing idiots sorta explains in part how i was the post decorated and discplinened officer on the force. evil erik
This thread is exhibit A of why no matter what we do, someone will bitch. This guy probably cleared the lawn mowing detail and went to a call. Along the way, someone called him In for driving too fast. Then someone else called him in for not stopping the speeder that drove right by the cop going the other way. When he got to the call, he got bitched at for getting there too slowly. Then he might have had to kick someones ass after he got there, which drew cheers from across the street, while the mother of the dirtbag, who called the cops in the first place, curses him. Then each individual viewer relates their little piece of the puzzle to their family and friends for the next month.

point is, armed populace can fend for itself as evidenced by the couple not far from there in creve ceour. guns save lives and in some instances it's good to have firepower for the police but what we have today is akin to a militant arm and if you don't believe that, look at the new training.

I think he did a great thing. Policing needs more than just positive PR, they need positive relationships with members of the community they protect.
It’s kind and it is helping to prevent that house from becoming a target by criminals who may think it is unoccupied and decide to drop in and check it out.
In the circumstances you mentioned, the officer would break away from cutting the grass, building trust btwn LE and youth, etc, to handle calls that are of a higher priority. Happens several times per day. Especially in today’s climate, things like this are important for so many reasons and take just a few minutes. The on average annual few cents each taxpaying citizen contributes to an officer’s salary was well spent in this instance. My opinion only. Good stuff.
Maryland Heights cops have sucked since I was a kid in the ‘80s. How would you like to be a Weston, or Pine Lawn, or Jennings cop? I know I’d want a machine gun to walk those streets at night.

It might be a good idea to check and see if the revenue for moving citations goes into City coffers. In many instances, it goes to the state and rarely make a positive fiscal impact on the town/City. Depending on the location, the number one and two complaints by citizens are quality of life issues and traffic.
In most any other job this would be your walking papers and likely a major bridge burning event.

I think good customer service in any job would not result in walking papers. The guy cut an elderly lady’s lawn and at least per the article, it had nothing but a positive impact on the community.

For one the fact he went to her door as a cop doing a welfair check because of tall grass is a little sketchy, especially with how those have been used to overstep the already abused 4A
On top of that if officer dingle berry ran over his foot with that mower, or hurt his back (as they sooo often do) who’s on the hook for the disability, early retirement, etc?

Go to any department and ask how many unsolved property crime or person crime cases they have, now ask how many police they have on traffic or just toodling around on “patrol”
Most departments now will just “that’s a civil matter” most all property crime calls anyways.
And person crime cases, unless there’s a dead body or the perp sticks around and confesses, they’ll just fire off a useless report and go back to sitting in their air conditioned car.

Arrests for “real” crime still occur as always. Homicide, rape, robbery, assault. I would encourage you to view the latest UCR from the FBI. All the stats you might be interested in...Legislation has changed laws where physical arrests and booking into jail for certain crimes is no longer allowed. Citations instead. The judicial system has also changed and after arrest, violent offenders are being let out of jail with sometimes several pending cases. Your lawmakers, DA’s, City Attorneys are behind those issues.
So free pass because “just following orders”?

Ive seen you make the “civil claim” a bunch. Would you agree there are circumstances such as domestic/family disputes, or disputes between business partners, where the matter is actually a civil and not criminal matter? Situations where ownership is in dispute?
