Official (DTA) SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

By the way guys we are caught up on most of our back log now and have some guns in stock on the shelf for any of you who have been waiting around. We have a handful of Hti, srs, and coverts in stock. Mostly black or green color combinations. Call Madison to get one before they are all sold 801-975-7272.

Thanks

Nick

Nick does that include Suppressors? I ordered one of those from Orkan back in May.

Grateful if you could info us whether any concrete progress has been made or so far.

'Any future mags will....' sounds worryingly as though, other than 'talk', the answer is: nothing's been done.

I'd be much happier with an straightforward answer giving either a genuine timeline or stating that you actually have no genuine intent or desire to make 10 rounders. :)

Or he could chose to simply say any future mags will fit existing skins and leave it at that.....being its his company and all......just saying.

Does anybody wish that the rear monopod had a rubber "boot" on it, so that it did not slide on concrete and other hard surfaces? I put Duct Tape on the bottom of mine, but I've been considering finding some kind of chair leg slider or boot for it - I haven't looked yet, I was gonna try Lowes. Has anybody else already explored this issue?

You might try rubber spray paint on the foot likely take 10 coats. If it don't work its easy to remove.

Well, thanks for that useful observation. Yes he could; but that would deliver absolutely no information of value though would it?

"Any future particle-beam weapon bolt ons will fit existing skins."
"Any future anti-gravity devices will fit existing skins."
"Any future giveaway bolt-on gold ingots will fit existing skins."

For a customer base that's probably chock full of people who are used to straight talk, aspirational open ended meaningless sales promises are frustrating. There's actually a very blurred line between sales-waffle that strings people along in order to keep the sellers market engaged and flat out, well, 'hot air'.

It's a simple question and fair question to ask: Has any real work been done on producing 10 round magazines?

An open-ended sales waffle answer that actually says nothing is an answer in its own right; it's a Rumsfeld 'known unknown' - in this case, if only waffle is forthcoming, one might deduce that it can be interpreted as a "No, we've done nothing. It's just talk".

I love it when the 10 Rd mag subject comes up and it has been coming up for years. When will you get it? It's up to the aftermarket to address this and well the base is just not that large to devote the R&D so either live with it or develope your own, in my opinion in the whole scope of things for DT it's not an issue they will address or it would have been done already. Heck it's even worse when shooting the WSM cases, I would be in heaven if I could get all 5 to feed from the mag period! So I am working on something myself because DT won't cause in the scope of things for DT it's base doesn't warrant the R&D of the calibers offered if it did it would have been addressed! Sort of a step child and i look for them to drop it from their line if not done already like the 243. What I don't get is that it's a military driven weapon and I would have thought the 10 Rd issue would have been in the design from the beginning. JMO and really means nothing, like stated above it's not my company, I'm just along for the ride!

To those who own an HTI .50 BMG, does it really kick the shit out of you? Iv'e been really thinking about purchasing one because I wanted a really accurate .50 for ELR shooting. I know there are better calibers for this like the .375 and on and on, but I just want a .50. It seems like I've been hearing alot lately that the HTI is too light and has too small a muzzle brake to make shooting it in .50 BMG any fun. I would really like to hear from all those that have one or have shot one.

Also could another more effective muzzle brake be put on it to reduce some of this recoil, or should I just look at a different rifle.

Would a longer barrel say 34" be made for the HTI .50 that would ad weight and some velocity, with a more effective brake?

No complaints from any of my clients and we have sold a lot of HTIs. You can get longer barrels made for it. Or you can get a more efficient brake. Better yet if you can own a suppressor all the better. I'm alright with the recoil but I dont shoot more than a few rounds at a time usually less than 10 to set them up and zero them for clients.

HTI recoil is not any more than a McMillan 50, in handling it is much better and doesn't flop around under recoil. I have shot 40 round strings without a bruise on my shoulder. The brake is angled to reduce recoil and keep the gases out of the shooters face. The Fisher style brakes have an slight edge in recoil reduction but will clean the hair off your head.

We will be releasing a 10 round magazine for the SRS this year guys. We have prototypes of the magazine but MDR development has slowed it. We have some new additions to the team that will allow more projects to be tackled. A left handed SRS is still in the plans too guys. That is official.

The HTI is very shootable in 50 BMG, but like any bolt action 50 BMG it has a fair amount of recoil. Someone who is recoil sensitive may complain about it but most shoot the HTI in 50 BMG just fine. There are plenty of videos on youtube that show the HTI in action and will help you judge the level of recoil. I believe FPS Russia did a review of it and took some shots offhand as well. If you set up properly behind it, the recoil on the HTI 50 BMG is very manageable. The .375 CT is very nice to shoot in the HTI Chassis. I personally wouldn't bother with a longer barrel or different brake on the HTI. The whole system was very well thought out by DT and shoots extremely well as is.

I happen to have a couple HTI rifles on the shelf right now if you are interested in purchasing one.

So did you ditch the plans to make a LH HTI, or are you dangling the LH SRS Carrot now for amusement ?
Don't get me wrong Nick, The LH crowd appreciates the notice's over the years, but it's just that I feel like Charlie brown getting set up by Lucy to kick the football again.
As it's going, Obama might be done with his third term before a LH DT is ever seen.

SHoot approx 50rds at a time without any problem. Recoil is nothing using AE 660gr at approx 2900ft. There is a noticeable increase in recoil with 800gr Mil Ball but still no bruising. Waiting for .375CT conversion to come in. It's incrediblly easy handling weapon for such a large caliber. and wouldn't trade that for Barrett, McMillan or any other 50 platform.

And, Sounds like NO more ambiguity over 10 rd mag for SRS. The man has spoken straight and clear. Can't wait.

Well, I think some of you read English differently to me

Any future mags will fit existing stocks.
....is completely without meaning. It is the antithesis of straight and clear. It is string-along waffle.

'Any' means this:

"Any future particle-beam weapon bolt ons will fit existing skins."
"Any future anti-gravity devices will fit existing skins."
"Any future giveaway bolt-on gold ingots will fit existing skins."

Shoots 100's post about the same waffle being applied to l/h explains the situation precisely. Carrot dangling:

If nothing at all has actually been done to move 10 rounders forward; nothing beyond posts here saying 'if they were ever to exist they would fit", it would be good, polite, to be informed clearly.

Marketing waffle pees-off those who can identify it.

STT and I have PM'd about this but I'll weigh in here

Jerry Miceluk shoots the Barrett offhand 6 shots in under a second. But I wouldn't take that, or the FPS Russia guy, into account when trying to determine if the recoil is manageable for me to shoot for extended sessions.

My Tac-50, which I sold to get the HTI is 375, was so unpleasant to shoot before I put the 4# AR-50 brake on it that nobody wanted to shoot it - including me. It even had an extra heavy barrel profile, and was 32" which added several pounds to it. Granted some of that shooting was from a bench, not prone. Which makes a big difference. Do you plan to shoot mostly off a bench or mostly prone?

There is no magic with recoil - the weight of the gun and size/efficiency of the brake. Thus the behemoth AR50 brake which is widely considered to be the best out there for taming recoil. And thus the AR50, with a weight of over 40# and that massive brake, is so tamed that we let the kids shoot it without any worry.

Bottom line is, I'd say if you're worried about the recoil you may wish to try to find some folks with these weapons so you can compare before you spend $10K. If you come to SLC, you're welcome to try my Barrett.

Finally, 50s are just a bitch for a lot of reasons. Heavy, noisy, banned at many ranges, special equipment for reloading and cleaning, hard to clean, big and must disassemble for transport (except the HTI), recoil etc. Which is why my decision to ditch the BigMac and get the HTI was so easy - I can shoot 375 all day like it's nothing, and if I get the urge to go 50 again, it's only a $2500 conversion, not a whole new rig and scope and accessories.....Likewise, if you got the HTI in 50 and got that 50 bug out of your system, and realized the recoil is a bit much, you could go teh opposite way I did and get a 375 kit for it.....

Just out of curiosity, which part of this statement made just yesterday would you consider non-English, ambiguous, or carrot-dangling?

Meatwaggon,

I would call it Ambiguous. Last January (2013), Nick posted that we would have 10-round mags " by end of year or early next year". That was posted in January of 2013, so DTA was saying that they would have mags by the end of 2013, or early 2014. In Nicks recent post, he admitted the mags got delayed do to the work being done on the new rifle.

In the past DTA time estimates have been missed. So DTA customers have learned that dates MAY or MAY NOT happen.

So when I read Nicks last post, I read it to say: DTA may (or may not) have 10-rounds mags in the next 2-10 months. I would call this Ambiguous.

I love the DTA system, and I appreciate Nick updating us, but I have to agree with Brown Dog that the message is Ambiguous. It sounds like the post we saw in January 2013.

It really is a terrific system. Its accurate, has repeatable zero barrel swaps, relatively small, fun to shoot, etc. DTA stands behind its products which is a huge plus. The 10-round mag will fill the one notable deficiency in this great system.

Abq-Defense,
We can just not provide any updates if you would prefer. We get guys on one side upset because we were trying to keep up with production and guys on the other wanting a magazine first. We can't please everyone all the time, but maybe you will get lucky this time. :)

Q-Unit,
Yes you can.

Nick,

I wasn't complaining about your recent update. I even said I appreciated the update.

I did say your update is ambiguous. You have to admit, your customers haven't had any clue when to expect 10-round mags, and they still don't.

Don't change how/when you update folks on my account. I have learned not to make buying decisions based on DTA time estimates, and the updates don't bring products to market any faster. DTA makes great products, but at this point, I only consider buying DTA items that are "In Stock".

So, I finally got a complete SRS-A1 with the 308 Win barrel. I put it together and have just been practicing manipulating the bolt and messing around with some dummy rounds seeing how they feed and eject. My issue is with the force required to lift the bolt. It starts to lift then requires a great deal of effort. Is this common?....It can't be... because most if not all of the videos I've watched show the user lifting the bolt with relative ease. AND since most of the time, I'm not even using dummy rounds, it should definitely lift with ease, right? I'm thinking with a spent shell casing in there, an issue could require some effort to lift and eject the shell...BUT not when empty.

Please advise.

Same here... After 300-ish bolt manipulations it's getting better.

Agree with that one too.

Can't remember who, but a great industrialist/retailer once said

'only half of my marketing works; the trouble is, I don't know which half';

Nick, I'd say, based on the fact that some people here seem to rejoice at nebulous and undefined updates, and the other half curl their toes in frustration; you're definitely hitting one of your halves :)

Nick,
I for one appreciate all your updates here on the Hide. I have 2 DTAs and love them both. I learned long ago that you can't please everyone! Just keep putting out top quality equipment and you're a winner. I also can't believe how rude and obnoxious some bloggers can be. Just seems to be the direction our Country is heading with all the anonymous bloggers on electronic media. I hope Desert Tech has a great and prosperous year!

Aint that the truth. This thread has completely degraded to a bitch fest.

I couldn't be a firearms manufacturer..... I don't have the patience for it.

Since everyone is telling Nick how to run his company, I'll chime in with "forget the 10 round mags Nick, get that MDR into production!"

I have a spot for both a 16 308 and an sbr 300 Bo in my safe.

Get on it... Chop chop!

Whoa! How this thread has changed! Time to remove it from my subscribed list.

My bolt lift is exactly the same way... REALLY heavy. Let me know what Russ says about it. Thanks.

The bolt lift seems to smooth out, the more it is used. My bolts are easier to lift now than when they were new.

Maybe there is some part of the bolt that could be polished down slightly, to speed up the process? I don't know if this is advised though (i.e. would you be polishing off some coating or hardening)?

Agreed. I have a .338LM bolt that I got with the first run of rifles in early 2009 and it is smooth. However, I ended up with one of the new bolts a couple years ago and it too is now pretty smooth, though initially was a bit rough.

Really looking forward to this shooting season, my 260 conversion will hold .25 at 100 yd for 5 shots in 18* and 60* weather and anything in between if I do my part. I'd like to get the 140 amax to do the same but with components being so hard to come by because of current administration and the fact that I don't want to burn my barrel up working the "perfect" load Ill settle for the .5 for 5 it gives me.

Im really thinking of working more with the 308 covet barrel this year. My groups with it are no where near as good, I think it's because of the short barrel. I sure do love shooting 208 amax subsonic through it though:)
If your ever in OHio check out my good friends at Rayners range or TVP.

Practice mag changes and dry firing. That will smooth it out.

I would not buy new skins just for a 10 round double-stack magazine, but I would definitely do it for a skin that gives me a 10-rounder AND a dust cover. Is that an idea worth pursuing I wonder. I think most or all of the R&D for the dust cover is already sunk in from the PSR anyway, no?
