Official (DTA) SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I guess I can't really say yes since I kind of am a gunsmith. I've removed a number of barrel extensions. I've also made up barrels and installed extensions. I use a tool I made myself to turn the extension while the barrel is clamped in a barrel vise or in the 4 jaw chuck on the lathe. Removal is pretty simple with a good breaker bar and the socket for the extension. 80 lb/ft isn't too much but a little heat is helpful to soften the factory loctite. Blue softens at fairly low temp.

I just realized I have 7 barrels for my Desert Tech, and really only shoot 2 of them with any regularity. Anyone else go a little overboard on buying barrels?
Yeah, I'm guilty of that too. I'm up to 5 now and have to keep stopping myself from buying more. It's amazing how many ways I can come up with to rationalize why I need yet another barrel.

I wouldn't say I have too many just yet, but I do need to focus a bit more. If they were all wildcats that I had to load for I'd be in trouble. I try and stick to calibers that I can buy ammo for if I need to or if I don't have time to load for.

I shoot my 26" 260 and 27" 6XC the most. Nowadays, if I cant suppress it, I wont shoot it.
I don't need to sell any of them other than to focus on less calibers, but if I would, it would be either my 18" 260 (need Covert Handguard to suppress it), 300 Win Mag or 6.5 SAUM.

I wish I had money to buy more barrels but that won't happen for at least a year , so I'm stuck with my 22" .308 for now. Has anyone put any Hornady Precision Hunter (308) through their SRS? Trying to figure out a good factory hunting round to use with this thing. Shots will be anywhere from 100-800y probably depending on what fields I decide to use this year.

I use the precision hunter in .308 with my SRS. It seems to be a good consistent ammo. Prior to deer season last year I was testing it and getting consistent hits on a 6" popper style steel target at 600 yards. My 308 barrel is also 22".

Its one I developed with Underground Precision. Great guy and it came out awesome. It will also fit my DT.

I assume you mean this guy? I've got a Covert, so unsure how it may fit. Do you have any pics of it in your DT?

Mine likes the PH in 6.5creedmoor

I have a 17" 260, 26" 260, 22" 308, 26" 7wsm, 7-300 norma and 6.5 saum ordered from es tactical. I'm hoping that it will be showing up soon before the crops get in.

I too have a shorter 260 and a full length 260, but curious about the reason you went with the 6.5 SAUM when you have a 7 WSM and a 7-300 Norma already? And what bullet are you using and what speeds are you getting out of it with the 7-300?

I already have everything to load for the saum and wanted a little longer barrel than the 6.5 saum that I have now. That caliber has grown on me with the way it performs at 1000-1200 yards. I'm using 195 bergers and during a pressure test I hit 3150 fps. I loaded quite a few up with a random charge so I could shoot a mile. They were at 3050 fps and I managed 3 in a row once I got on target. It sucked not being able to spot misses so I didn't shoot much after that. I don't know if it's from the new brass or what but the primers are flat like I have pressure. I dont have any other signs. I need to load a few pieces of fire formed brass to see if it's any better.

Need help with my magazine on my SRS A-1. Running a TS customs 260 barrel. My problem is the magazine. It will only allow me to run the Berger 140’s at 40 thou off. I want to try and run them closer, like 10-15 thou off. I’d like to get a magazine that’s a little bit longer that would allow that. Any advice on where to get one? Should I look at another caliber magazine possibly that would work?
Thanks

Wow I have never seen a DT magazine be to short to get close to the lands. That would be a first for me. Did you specially request it cut longer than normal?

Get in touch with short action customs, they can probably take care of you with the modified mags they are doing.

Finally got my 16" barrel! I have been wanting to have the option to convert my A1 to a lighter weight covert ever since I bought this rifle last year. I traded into a covert handrail and bought an unfired 26" Special Purpose Rifles 6.5x47 conversion here on the hide. I sent it over to Mark at SAC to cut it down to 16", thread it and time a TBAC break and give it deep flutes on the barrel and shank to cut as much weight out as possible. After receiving it I sent the Handguard, mag and Barrel to Daniel over at Primal Finish to match the Mirage Cerakote I already had on the rifle.
Mark at SAC did a fantastic job, after cutting the barrel down he weighed it before cutting the deep flutes after fluting he said it cut off .55lbs. I weighed the barrel before sending it off and after cutting it down and flutting it went from 5.28 lbs to 3.68 lbs so it saved 1.6 lbs all in! The rifle with mag, scope, TBAC Ultra 7 and RRS rail went from 15.3 lbs to 13.1 lbs.
I can't say enough about Daniel over at Primal Finish his work is impeccable, the attention to detail and quality of his work is just incredible.
Here are a few pics.

I just finished load dev. On the 16” barrel so for anyone looking to get a shorty barrel here is some load data:
130 Berger Hydbids
10 thou off the lands
Low node: 37.4 Varget @ 2682fps
High node: 39.2 Varget @2812fps
Shot Suppressed over Mag. Speed
Both were right at 1/4”
Saw very slight signs of pressure (ejector swipe) 39.4g.

I have the same issue with my 260 with the Berger 140 too. My barrel has about 2000 rounds though and when I set it for about 10 thousandths jump it won’t fit in the magazine. So I seat the bullet so it fits in the magazine, or about 30-40 thousandths jump with no ill affect on case capacity or accuracy.
Maybe that’s a solution for you if your barrel doesn’t mind it.

Too anyone who has purchased the new SRS A2 Chassis....

My package included a plastic t handle torque wrench with a 88 inch pounds setting. I was just wondering if this is now included with all SRS A2 Chassis? I thought the preferred torque for the chassis was 80 inch pounds, so i'm just curious.

Thanks

The preferred torque setting has changed a few times over the years. When I bought my Gen1, I believe it was 50 or 55 in lbs. Then they upped the setting to 65, if I remember correctly, then 75 or 80. I use 75, since my old Borka kit has 5 in lbs increments

I just bought a used 26 inch dt 260 Rem barrel. I have some 140gr eld match bullets to load up but would like to load up some higher velocity lighter bullets for prairie dogs. Anybody have any suggestions on light bullets/powders combos that work well in the factory barrel?

Barrel burnout. Just want a few for 1-200 yard shooting. I can’t find many 85 gr sierra, Nosler 90gr varmageden and 90 gr Speer tnt, 95gr Hornady vMax. I’ll probably try some 85 gr Sierra and 90gr Nosler unless somebody has a recommendation

Anyone have any issues with light strikes? I've had 3 this week. 2 in one day, during a match :( shooting Hornady 6.5cm 147 ELD Match. No we else had light strikes using the same ammo. I've only ever shot Prime 338 match ammo last year with no issue. Unsure if it's a warranty issue, or a disassemble the bolt and clean issue.

Finished an Advanced Precision Rifle week at Gunsite and then participated in my first ever LRPR match in Phoenix. Definitely a learning experience. Will be attending more around North Carolina. One stage I got a perfect score with a 3moa 5 shot group at 500y. I've never shot quarter moa at 100y before and was told this would be equivalent to shooting the same hole at 100. The rifle seems to exceed the accuracy that I'm currently capable of.

3 moa is not equivalent to quarter moa. 3" is a little over half moa at 500 (.6) maybe that's what you're saying - still solid shooting. But, regardless, sounds like you're having a big time with a fine rifle. Keep it up! I've never experienced any type of problem with light primer strikes and I have only disassembled my bolt once in about 800 rounds. But, I'd start with cleaning the bolt well.

Most likely its a primer issue. I've had 3 light strikes in the 3500 rounds (handloads) I have shot last year. All I did was unlock then lock the bolt and fire it again. That has yet to fail me. However on 2 of the light stikes, I'm certain the bolt wasn't fully locked, which mat have been the issue.

Check firing pin protrusion if you have the tools. But I guarantee it's a primer issue. All the same lot? If so contact Hornady to inform them of a potential defect in primers for that lot.

What is the round count on that specific bolt? Have you made any modifications to the trigger group? This can cause light stakes as well.
