I have a Covert (just over 400 rounds fired) and it craters EVERYTHING fired in it like a factory Rem 700 SPS. By everything I mean Black Hills, FGMM, 175 smk Handloads at 2300 fps (16 barrel), 175 smk handloads at 2450 (16 barrel), and subsonic handloads.
CCI standards, Federal match, and win primers have been tried with no change.
No pressure signs. Primers are rounded on edge, no heavy bolt etc.
Possible issue with the firing pin or firing pin hole I'm thinking.</div></div>
This was a common issue due to what many cite as an oversize firing pin hole. Somewhere in this string of posts, the issue was brought up. It is speculated that due to the floating firing pin design, the hole was left large to prevent the firing pin from sticking due to fouling. John Beanland mentioned bushing the firing pin hole to solve the problem. I contacted him about it, and he said he wasn't interested in bushing another at that time due to the hardness of the bolt. I continued to fire mine without incident. More recently, the question was raised about 6.5x47 and small primers being an issue with the large firing pin hole. DTA responded that they are now bushing all of their bolts, and they would bush older bolts for this application. As I was switching to this caliber, I contacted them. The bushed my bolt free of charge, and the issue went away. Is it really an issue? I am not entirely convinced. Yes, your primers will look funny. If you are pushing the edge of high pressure, it could be. I never had problems, and I push a 175 SMK to 2750 with 44g of Varget out of Win brass.
