Official (DTA) SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I'm looking at purchasing a Covert but am worried about a couple things. With the receiver being made of aluminum and the trigger being made of plastic has anyone had problems with these parts? Are there any upgrades that would make these parts more solid or am I worrying about something I shouldn't be? Thanks a bunch guys, hope to be part of the club soon.

Plastic trigger? I'm literally holding one in my hand right now. No plastic. All steel and aluminum.

That's weird. I called them today and they said it was polymer.

They must have misunderstood what you said because the trigger shoe's are made of a very well machined piece of aluminum. Might I suggest that you wait until you get your DTA and handle and send rounds down range before you make any judgements. Believe me you are going to be VERY pleased! Stop worrying!

Settle down guy, wasn't making any judgements. Was just trying to pick your guys' brains before I plopped $4000 down on one. No big deal. Thanks for the info.

Hey guys
Dont know if anyone can help but im thinking of getting my 260 and 338 barrels put through the salt bath nitriding process and wonder if the barrel extensions have to come off before hand or can go in still on?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I think Nik posted that the barrel extensions would lose their temper if subjected to salt bath nitriding and result in a possibly dangerous situation. Many people praise the process for barrels, but I'm apprehensive because the temperatures used seem close to the first phase transformation for steel. If the first phase transformation temperature is exceeded the barrel will probably be expensive scrap metal. The process is routinely performed without any problems, but I'm not brave enough to try it.

Hey sorry if you took me wrong it wasn't meant that way, I understand what your saying about the investment, just saying don't let the all the things you read get blown out of wack, except one thing for sure DTA takes care of it's customers without a doubt. Like I stated you are going to be very pleased with your purchase. Sorry for the ruffled feathers!

It's all good. I called them again to make sure and he told me again that it was made of polymer. Then i told him that "a guy on snipers hide told me his is aluminum." He then corrected himself and said that they had just upgraded to the aluminum.

Now if i can just find a covert in stock somewhere... Everyone I've called is back ordered to November. :(

Although you should have no issues with heavies due to the 8-twist barrel, I have shot many different types of commercial ammo through my Covert and it performed extremely well with all of them:

Hornady 150 gr SST
CorBon 155 gr Scenar
FGMM 168 gr SMK
BlacK Hills 168 gr SMK
Hornady 168 gr A-Max
Black Hills 168 gr A-Max
FGMM 175 gr SMK
Black Hills 175 gr SMK
Applied Ballistics 175 gr Tactical
Black Hills 180 Nosler Accutip
CorBon 190 gr SMK

My guess is that it would be much harder to find a load that doesn't shoot well, as opposed to one that does.

Did you roll these primarily with Varget? What's your experience with the .338 bullets?

Creature, PM sent.

Those were all factory [commercial] .308 loads, not handrolls. I have the 16" 8-twist and 22" 11-twist DTA .308 barrels, as well as an 18" 10-twist from Mark Gordon at S.A.C., also in .308. My point was that they have all shot very well with pretty much any decent commercial ammo I've tried. Don't have any experience with .338.

Hey bro. Don't get caught up in this new A1 fiasco. I recently purchased a Covert, and was presented with the A1 dilemma. After contacting DTA, I was assured that my Gen 2 was the same thing as the A1 for about $500 less. The only difference is the lack of cheek rest, and a more comfortable butt pad. Both items will be a simple upgrade on a Gen2 that was milled within the last 6 months. Both of these items are not needed for the 95% of us DTA owners. I don't see how my Gen2 could get any better. I'm sure someone in this great nation of ours has one in stock. Just verify it was produced in the last 6 months if you are interested in upgrading to the cheek rest at home else it will have to be sent in to get milled. I get my goods less than msrp from a guy in Michigan. He probably has another one on its way soon. PM me if you want his info. I have been buying custom 1911s from him for years... All several hundred less than msrp. I don't know how he makes money.

Salt Bath nitrating (QPQ/Melonite) will ruin the temper on hardened steel (bolt head and barrel extensions) and will compromise the safety of the rifle. Softer steel parts like the barrel are okay to melonite because they are soft enough to not be affected by the process. Make sure that your barrel is seasoned prior to nitrating because any imperfections will be hardened inside the barrel and will take a very very long time to break in if you nitrate a brand new barrel.

Thanks

Nick

I had some time and decided to pull off my DTA SRS skins and take a look at the chassis. I've attached a picture which shows the milling done from the factory for the A1 adjustable cheekpiece. I thought others might be interested. I was told this milling is done on all chassis as of 6 months ago so it should be a simple user swap to add the cheekpiece to recent gen 2 SRS/Coverts.

I don't understand why they don't have one in left hand. its not that hard to do. If they had one in left hand i would gladly buy one. I am now currently building a custom left handed bolt action. I wish they had it in lefty cause I'd be buying instead of typing right now.

It has been said before, We will be offering a left handed version in the future. That is directly from the owner.

It's not that hard? Glad you think so.

The shop guys are workin their tails off on current requests. Have you noticed all the people looking for SRS's an Coverts? The demand is exceeding the supply.

It's being addressed and will hit the market gents. You have got to be patient.

Russ @ Desert Tactical.

What is the difference between generation 1 and generation 2 SRS rifles? Also, could one use a 16in covert barrel with a SRS chassis and then fit a suppressor under the handguard?

70+ pages is a lot of pages to navigate through. Sorry if I'm asking questions that I have already been asked

The gen 1 uses a pin to index the barrel. The gen 2 uses the feed ramp to index the barrel.

I had the same idea on the covert barrel with can under the hand guard, but the isn't a can that i have found that well fit under the hands guard. So that would be a no go.

Hi there everyone,
This is my first post. I'm planning on buying a DTA Covert sometime this year. Is anyone putting together a group buy? Thanks.

From what I have read, DTA production is running as fast as possible but can't keep up with demand. There is about a 3 month wait on deliveries.

So I doubt they can produce enough rifles for a group buy.

Thanks Gman,
And thanks to everyone on this thread for providing excellent info and insight on DTA products. I'm on about page 13 of the thread trying to make my way through it all.

I'm thinking i will be part of the club here shortly. Quick question, can covert/SRS barrels and conversion kits still be bought for the generation 1 DTA rifles? Anyone know if DTA is going to continue supporting these rifles since they're discontinued?

Yup, I have a Gen 1 from the first run and have 4 conversions for it. You will have a hard time getting complete barrels with the Gen 1 extension from dealers (though they can order them). I've gotten them all from DTA as recently as last October. You can also get the Gen 1 extension from DTA and have someone do a custom barrel for you. They've stated that the will continue to support the Gen 1 receivers.

Hey gents.....

I'm looking for a few things. Found the Covert barrel. Anyone with a factory 7WSM that they want to part with?

We have a lot of things for trade. Optics, components, other assorted gear. Cash too. Just PM me with what you have.

This is completely separate from DTA/DTM so PM me with whatever you have. He isn't on here so I will take care of all the exchanges.

Russ

Edited to narrow my search:
Guys, my apologies. We don't need any 300 WM or 338 Lapua. Just the smaller calibers up to 7WSM. I scored him a Covert barrel already. Thanks for all the PM's. I cleaned out my box for anyone that might have tried and couldn't get through.

Can anyone recommend some scope rings/mount for me. I'm gonna be running a Nightforce 5.5-22x50 on a DTA SRS. I would like a set with 20-30moa built into it. I'd really like a Spuhr or DTA rings but they're out of my price range at the moment. Who sells a one-piece mount with cant built into it, aside from those two companies?

Not being mean but you have a $4600+ gun, a $2k scope and you are worried about $235 rings?? I would save a little longer and get the right ones. Once again, not being mean, just looks a little funny.

Haha you make a good point. I'm gonna go with DTA rings. LOL You guys gotta give me some time to get used to this whole high end rifle thing. I'm used to dropping $150 on a set of Badger Ordnance or Nightforce rings and being done with it. Now when i think about it it isn't that big of a jump considering it has a canted base with it.

Now I just need to find someone with DTA accessories in stock.

Hey guys. I have traded for a Covert Barrel and bolt. Still looking for a 7WSM barrel for the old man. He is chomping at bit to zero his Covert. I guess all those stock piled 178 AMax's are going to come in handy for him.

Will edit the above post as well.

Glad to see the SRS/Covert crew is so close knit. I was surprised at how many offers for trade I got.

Russ @ DTM

Anyone interested in trading a brand new unfired 18" (Gen1) .308 barrel already professionally rethreaded to 5/8x24 for a (Gen1) .338LM barrel? I already have the bolt, I just need to decide if I am going to save the extra extension I have and buy a complete barrel or have biffj build me one from a blank.

Hey guys,

My rifle is due in anytime and I'm am like a kid waiting for Christmas! I have a scope mount question though. I'm planning on picking up a Spuhr but not sure on which model I need. I'll be mounting either a Steiner 5-25 or a Kahles 624i. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have the Kahles 6-24i in a spuhr. Have .308 22in conversion and am waiting on my .338 conversion(any day now). I went with the 44.4 MOA mount. I have the mil 6 reticle which has the + marks at .5 mil and 1 mil. My 100 yard zero is the top + or -1mil and the center dot is a dead on 300 yard zero. With .338 I should be able to use the full 26mils in the scope to get me out to 2000yard or a hair over.
