So, there I was at the range, first time out with my new SRS. I was shooting from the bench, and had just got my USO scope zeroed. Shooting off an Atlas bipod. Rifle was at the extreme left edge of the table. (Can you see where this is heading?
)
Anyway, I stand up to grab some more ammo from my bag. As soon as I step away, the rifle flops over to the left from being vertical on the bipod. (Tension knob was fully loose). Momentum causes the whole rig to continue tipping left, and over the side of the bench it goes! Juuuust out of reach, it hits the concrete on it's left side, buttstock and scope making a nice SMACK as they hit.
After exhausting my full range of expletives, I examined the damage:
Most obvious was the butt pad, which I thought had just popped off.
No such luck!
I was really surprised at the way the butt pad broke off. I know that folks have had occasional trouble with the plastic tabs breaking off, but this definitely went beyond that. The inside damage was far worse than the outside.
Scope took a pretty good hit, but it's a USO, so the damage is strictly cosmetic.
Still hurts to look at though.........
Left side of the stock got a little scrape.
Looks like I'll be getting some Krylon for some "custom" paint. I gotta say, I am disappointed in the butt pad. I love this rifle, and in all other ways, it's a tank. But, I think the plastic interface on the butt pad needs to be improved. I will be contacting DTA tomorrow, and will be ordering the aluminum version of the butt pad attachment. However IMO, this rifle really should have this from the factory. A three foot drop onto concrete shouldn't put this rifle out of commission like it did. I know that guys will chime in about how they have fired umpteen hundreds/thousands of rounds, and never had a problem. But I think the damage speaks for itself. For me, it's just an inconvenience. At the worst, it would ruin a hunt or a match. But, for those that might take it into harm's way, it might be worth considering an upgrade.

^^^ I really don't understand why DTA while knowing about this problem doesn't remedy it from the factory. Instead they offer an upgrade for $80. IMO its kind of insulting after dropping over $7000 on one of these rifles.

We have been working on a permanent solution for the buttpad mount material for a while now, the aluminum was a temporary option for those who wanted something immediately. The new mechanisms will be at shot show and will be retrofittable to all SRS rifles.

Az308, how are you liking your AAD mount? I love mine, fits the DTA perfectly.
As to the broken buttpad, yes it sucks, mine was broken when I picked it up. I imediately replaced it with aluminum.

I'm with you, DTA needs to fix this (which it looks like that is coming soon) and they need to offer this to us veteran DTA shooters/owners at a "family" discount.
These DTA rifles are built tough, but as with any manufactured item, things break on 'em.

I have only had one of our many demo guns have an issue with a tooth and I accidentally swung it down to the floor like a carnival hammer. The only reason we developed the aluminum mount was for PSR drop testing requirements. The original mount was initially thought to be something that was sufficiently strong for everything but military drop tests but it has proven over time to be a problem. We will do a buttpad upgrade deal for all the veterans guys.

How about we use guest shooters rather than company shooters...or we could do it twice with both. I think that's a better idea as we would have double the bragging rights after we kick ass twice

Went out this weekend with a member here that lives in the DFW area. More members should strive to be like this guy. He was 100% willing to let me shoot the rifle and get an idea of it. Not to mention, we went out to a range that was by no means a close range (proximity wise) for either of us. So kudos to MicLR, THANKS!
It was my first time behind a DTA. It was also my first time holding one. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the rifle. There were two concerns before shooting the rifle. (1) Does the rifle hop a lot with the weight shift from the bullpup design and (2) How quick is the bolt manipulation.
With respect to (1). The hop was a bit more noticeable than say my AI. However, with proper loading, I don't perceive it being a problem. Not to mention, on this particular gun, no brake was installed yet.
With respect to (2). The bolt manipulation was much faster than I had thought. Turns out the bolt wasn't nearly as far back as I anticipated. I think with a DTA set to my length of pull (using the right number of extensions for me), I'll be comfortable behind one to really run it well. To be honest, it really took no effort to get used to it.
In short, I guess I'll be getting one asap!

I have been a site stalker for years never posting anything until now. I have a dta in 308/300, outstanding rifle from a good company with great customer service. my 308 shoots .25 consistantly with several ammo brands in 168 bthp, loves fed 150 ballistic tip.
i have not been able to get my 300 to group better than 1.25, called them, said thats not right send it back. No beating around the bush, just send it back we will make it right. thats the way it should be.
anyone in the east texas area that is not sure about this system i would be happy to let you try mine.

Buying an srs in 338 this week, a few questions, what mount do I want and how many moa cant do I need to mount a 5-25x56 pm II to utilize the most adjustment on a double turn? Looking to get a 300 Norma barrel for this who does reputable work on the aftermarket aspect for the srs platform?

For barrels other than DTA factory calibers, Marc Gordon at Short Action Customs is the way to go. Huge +1 for the AADmount, perfect fit and a killer product for a good price, and made in the US.

Just had my .308 bolt go down on me yesterday. I called up DTA and they are sending me a new firing pin and spring for free even though I bought the .308 conversion used here on the Hide. SRS was purchased directly through them.

well yes the scope was far back, that was where it was comfortable BUUUUT my hearing protection wouldn't fit because of that damn little bump they have on the but pad. i had to move it forward and its a little awkward for me but it works. the mount is an AI mount 45 moa but it didn't quite work out( long story) it was almost impossible to find one that fit and wouldn't run into the front rail and also have a moa canter. thanks to Advice from frank i used a 0 Moa mount with a couple of shems at the back and that worked like a charm. (and thanks to the folks at Mile High Shooting for all there help they are very nice peeps) i was also told every one might like to see the mono pod i made for the back of it. the one from the factory cost like $340 and i just couldn't see paying that for a "kickstand" so i bought a 1 1/4" grade 5 bolt from a place that sells old machine junk and took it over and used my friends lathe and made one. cost me a bout $5 and 3-4 hours of time. you can one button push it and it will drop and you can fine thread it also. i may replace the course thread with fine due to it being a little noisy.

Anybody know where I can buy a DTA aluminum replacement buttpad mount online? Their website has it but does not allow me to add it to chart and buy it.

yes i did Dixie3bass . i worked 2 years at a machine shop.I did industrial maintenance/electrical work for most of my working career. with the maintenance work i also did some machining. im of course not an expert at it but i can make any thing i have ever needed to make. im actually tossing around the idea of gunsmith school. i Love to machine and i love guns so it just kind of makes sense. the problem is there is so much prejudice against women doing that type of work im not sure if i could make a go of it. if i cant get clients because they wont give me a change because im a woman it might make it a bit hard to make any money at it.

That monopod is a clever piece of work. I also noticed you have a nifty buttpad solution I haven't seen before. If you have an aptitude for seeing problems (e.g., sloppy $300 factory monopods, and rock=hard buttstocks) and can offer competitive solutions you'll make money and build a reputation.
You might face some headwinds as a woman if you were trying to run a storefront, but aside from that there's plenty of opportunities for an entrepreneur with your background and interests. I'd even suggest skipping the formal schools. There's enough ideas and feedback available online to keep you employed fulltime.
