Gunsmithing OK Dumb NOOB question

I have a Carbon XLR chassis....I want to add a picatinny rail to it so I can mount bipods etc. What part do I need to bolt the picatinny rail to the carbon hand guard. I have looked through brownells and midway but all that comes up are just the picatinny rail section which I already have. I need the backing plate that the rail screws bolt into. What term do I search for?

Have you bothered to look at the XLR webpage?? They sell rail sections with the proper backing plates and screws. If you are trying to shade tree something you already have you are pissing up a rope and deserve to get wet.

Thanks....and yes....we are all friends here so no need to be a tool. I do know that XLR sells them. GH41....make a lot of friends do you? Was trying to avoid buying a $40 section of rail just to get a few little backing nuts.

What can I use to instead of paying top dollar at xlr....they make a great product and I love their chassis but I feel that this small part does not need to be engineered to withstand a nuclear blast.

Really just looking for the name of that part.....so I can shop and do my homework on my own and not cause so much stress and anxiety to GH41's fragile personality.

if theres one thing ive learned, just buy the right stuff the first time, its cheaper than buying it twice.

Yea, There is a guy on another forum that got it backwards. He wants to put a 250 dollar scope in a NF mount. His reasoning is he might get a better scope one day. I guess it takes all kinds. Some heads are harder than others!

I was not asking for a 50cent backing nut...I was asking what the hell the name of the backing plate is called so I can buy the proper one....I dont want to spend $38 on a rail because I already have one I want to use....I dont see the sense in paying $38 for a 3 or 4 backing nuts. I am fully aware of the properties of how to work with Carbon Fiber....I am a boat builder by trade and work with Americas Cup teams...we make hulls, wings, and foils all out of carbon. If I have to Ill make my own backing plate out of g10 plate or a strip of carbon I can cut to shape and tap it. I can build it to spec and it will cost me pennies on the dollar. Still want to know what these backing nuts are called or where I can buy them separate from the rail.....

Buy the time you buy the correct length fasteners, the nuts and fabricate the backing plate to properly fit the inside contour of the handguard you will have spent more time and money than the 32 dollars XLR will charge you for the whole damn kit.
I understand that you already have the rail, but I see fail and frustration written all over this.

And that's only if his rail section has lugs on it to prevent shifting. He could always cut the old lady next door's lawn for 38 bucks or ask his boss for an hour overtime. He could do either in less time than he could source the materials to build it himself.

Thats whats wrong with your generation....why bother putting some effort into something when you can just write a check and have someone else do it for you. Leaky pipe...no need to learn how to fix it....just call the plumber and write a check. Flat tire....no worries...thats why you write the check for AAA. Leaky roof....write a check. Lawn needs mowing....write a check. Computer wont turn on....call a tech to come out on a house call and then write him a check too. HELL according to you guys if you have enough money why bother learning anything at all!!

I do a lot of things that require time and patience and skill. I sharpen and strop my straight razor to shave each morning. I drive a 1948 MG on the weekends that requires a hand crank to start. I tie my own flies for fly fishing. I made my own predator caller out of a PA speaker and a Bluetooth amp which all up it cost me $65 and about 1 hr of my time (Foxpro makes one similar for 7x that cost).... Sure there are faster and easier ways to do these things but that is not the point. I take pride and satisfaction in learning a new skill and putting it to use. Ill bet that if you were ever to travel back in time, you could tell everyone about what great stuff we have in the future...but you would have no clue how to build it or how to make any of it work.

SO youre saying I should go hurry and work at something I don't enjoy doing so that instead I can write someone else a check, just so they can do the job I like doing in the first place. SO you prefer mowing lawns over working on your own rifle? Ill bet youre the kind of guy who orders your rifle from a spec sheet at the gunsmiths and then tells everyone you custom built it right?

im a consulting engineer/ machinist/ professor........i literally make and design things for a living......its not a matter of "learning anything"......its a matter of time and efficiency.....hell, i even do my own gunsmithing.......but if i can find what i want already made, im just going to buy it....why go through the hassle if i dont have to?

i could easily fab up something that would work......buy raw materials for $15-20......maybe spend a couple hours in fab.......hell, even if i value my time at $10/hr.....im still at the same price if i just bought the damn thing already made, and im guaranteed the thing will work well the first time.

now if you want to build something just to build something....then by all means have fun..........but if youre trying to cut corners.....personally ide rather spend that 2 hrs with my family
