Ok, who was this? Which one of you said you can shoot 710 yards with a 22 iron sights and hit a pop can?

I have little doubt some people can see a pop can at 710 in some scenarios. Glinting in the sun. Or being metallic red on a white snowy backdrop.

We would often take our 66% ipsc's out and spray a red patch and use either pop cans rolling around in the pickup box or clay birds we picked up while cleaning the range....then just lay it on the red paint and spray white paint over the rest for a nice clean circle.

The thing is can a guy HIT anything that small at that range with a less than ideal equipment? Not fucking likely.

I was hoping he would smack that big plate and it would spawl the can. Then holy fuck would the internet be shitting its diapers upset. Cuz they didn't paint that plate nice and clean to leave no doubt if the can was potentially hit perfect. There'd be some real sore ass over that bitching he did or didn't pull it off.

I attended a match at fort benning and the AMU team was coaching/ giving classes. One of the troops on AMU got set up in a sitting position with an M16A2. After getting position set, they put covers on the sights so they could not be seen. Based on building that perfect position and natural point of aim, he put 5 rounds in the 10&X ring rapid fire. Back when I shot small bore in college, I could tell quickly when my position ( especially offhand or kneeling) wasn’t right and what the results would be when I didn’t adjust properly

With this video, if shot here on a nice day, at 4700 ASL and a DA of 6000, he would need a 90-95' holdover. Looks like blue skies in the vid, and really no background structure for a reference point, he was aiming at a blue sky from an unsupported position with a light 10/22.
Throw in the accuracy potential of carbine 10/22 and ammo not known for it's stellar performance, IMO, it would have been a miracle just to hit that huge plate.
Even with the best spotter-shot caller around, 10 feet up and 8 feet left means diddly shit if the rifle moved a fraction of a bit when fired.
Looks or sounds like they had fun, and now others will need to try.

I have shot 22LR at 700 yards, with rifles and ammo that may be considered substantially more accurate than what he was using, from a far more stable position. I walked away thinking I won't try this again until I get a faster than 16tw barrel. And a really low wind day.

He said he was wearing contacts, but I’d be really surprised if lens crafters is sending out contacts that correct to better than 20/20- especially at distance. I don’t know. My vision is still uncorrected. But, I read that after Lasic surgery, Tiger woods had 20/10 vision. Apparently, that’s kind of luck of the draw. You can come out still needing glasses/contacts. Or, you could be Superman…

"MarkandSam After Work" have shot .22lr out to 1,000 yards with some success...but they actually calculate the ballistics, set up their equipment for the shot, have real spotting calls, and don't do it with a cheap iron sighted 10/22 leaning over a big ass tire.

I had LASIK when i was 21, came out with 20/10 vision. Now in my late 30's it has degraded to 20/20. Best money I have ever spent.

The main issue here is the ammo the guy was using. Had he been using CCI minimags he would've had a lot better success.

If the video is any guide, you don’t need to be able to back up any of your claims. So, it really doesn’t matter if you have the gun or not.

This. I once, long ago, shot both left-side wings off a hovering dragonfly with a BB gun. About 7 ft away. He dropped in the lake and my friend was amazed.

I wasted 400 more BBs trying to replicate that. I could probably try that every day of my life and not do that again.

Its possible that his prescription for contacts was slightly over-powered. This actually is a common occurance. Its still not likely that it gave him anywhere near 20/14 vision (or better)..

Also, anyone thinking his vision would be better at long range with just some over-powered contacts...has likely never shot with contacts.

Contacts do not cover the cornea entirely, which actually impairs long range vision. Concentrating (straining) your eyes for the type of shooting involved here, would make his vision in the moment measurably worse than the average person with 20/20 and no corrective lenses (contacts specifically).

Im writing that as someone who wore contacts for 10+ years, something like 20/100 at the worst point .. then had lasik which initially corrected to 20/15...and eventually degraded down to 20/20 at about the 10 year point.
