1. Savage Model 111 currently 30-06 bull barrel (11 years old)
I beleive it is a long actions as the screws are 5.062- please tell me if I am wrong.
Is it possible to make the model 111 into a 7WSM or 284 with a mag blot face.
Plans are as follows-
Use the action and get blueprinted/trued up
new bolt and recoil lug
receiver face trued
Bartlein/Hart/Krieger or Shilen Barrel at least 24"-trued
Barrel threaded for Thunder beast
Jewell trigger
custom bolt knob
m16 extractor
APA DBM w mag
Manners or mcmillan A5 depending on price and availablity
pillar bed

2. Savage Model 110 currently 30-06 standard barrel (also 11 years old)
I beleive it is a long actions as the screws are 5.062- please tell me if I am wrong.
Is it possible to make the model 110 into a 6.5CR or 260
-----I want one of the above two but if not then I might have to go with the a 6.5-284---- Ballistics tells me that the 6.5cr is superior
Plans are as follows-
Use the action and get blueprinted/trued up
new bolt and recoil lug
receiver face trued
Bartlein/Hart/Krieger or Shilen Barrel at least 24"-trued
Barrel threaded for Thunder beast
Jewell trigger
custom bolt knob
m16 extractor
APA DBM w mag
Manners or mcmillan A5 depending on price and availablity

After alot of reading and trying to figure out a plan. It turns out my wife is interested in shooting tactical matches with me. So that is why the 110 is going more for the 260 range. I just need feedback to see if this build is possible with the actions/savage guns I have. If you have any input or suggestions on a better build please let me know and be kind. I am willing to learn and will take my lumps.
One thing before I let this fly, savage rifles have always had a tough bolt where as the rem's are so smooth. Since I am basically taking it all down and rebuilding please include any ideas to make this smooth.

.284 is a standard bolt head, but they are easy to change. I have no experience with the WSM. I run a long throated LA savage in 284 with a McM A5 and CDI BM. Love that rifle!

I have built 2 LA savages here lately, a 284 and a 6x47L. I run a 223 bolt baffle and CDI's LA/308 mag box BM for the 6L. Both feed and perform great. Not sure about your extractor idea, may be hard on a savage. Anything is possible if you throw enough money at it though. Good Luck.

Re: Old Model Savage rebuild--Help with a sanity check

I agree the model 111 savage is going to be a 284 or a 6.5-284 depending on ballistics and what the gunsmith says and what parts are available. I am starting a parts list from the above -- any recommendations---

The model 110 I don't see how I am going to get a 6.5 creemadore in the long action.--- so I propose a 7wsm or a 264 win mag---- but those are still two rifles in the same caliber and I wanted one for my wife or girls to start with. Thunder beast will help what do y'all think.
There are also these options below for a long action.
• 6mm-06
• 6mm Catbird (6-06 AI)
• 25-06
• 6.5-06, 6.5-06 A-square, 260 Newton
• 270 Win

Re: Old Model Savage rebuild--Help with a sanity check

I know that there's a thread somewhere on here where guys are using ball bearings in the base of .40 cases or something like that to smooth up the bolt...

Re: Old Model Savage rebuild--Help with a sanity check

Mine is a 26" Criterion, it shoots the 180 berger hybrids right at 2800fps. If it doesnt shoot under a half moa then I'm not doing something right on my end. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the top makers. Go with what your smith likes, or pick one that tickles your fansy and roll with it.

Re: Old Model Savage rebuild--Help with a sanity check

I have my gunsmith who is telling me that a 280 Ackley would be better than the 284 but from what I have read on the hide I would think otherwise.

Re: Old Model Savage rebuild--Help with a sanity check

On my .284 Savage I have a Shilen Select Match barrel from Northland Shooter Supply. Running CDI bottom metal and a Manners T5

That is exactly what I had in mind, I just was very unsure which way to do as the 280 AI has alot of good data, but with that picture I think that makes up my mind.
