Re: On Handgun Stopping Power
All I will say on the matter of ballistic wounding factors is read some MOH citations and get an idea of what kind of physical trauma people can continue to fight through if they are severely determined. Just keep shooting until the threat stops.
One thing I think a LOT of people overlook is using a gun they can employ effectively. I've seen a LOT of people that couldn't handle the recoil of a .45acp handgun, that choose one because of these ballistic myths, and they end up only being able to run that gun practically as slow as a cap and ball because it's too much for them. That is not effective. In those cases, something like a 9mm may have been much more effective, and they may have been able to handle the recoil better and shoot faster while maintaining accuracy. I can handle .45acp just fine, and I absolutely love that caliber and 1911's. What do I choose to carry? A Glock 17. Why? Because that very few percent of performance ballistic difference isn't worth as much to me as being able to run the gun as quickly and effectively as possible. If I have to go one-handed (injury) in a fight, I can do so and easily still be able to maintain a 3-4 round per second rate of fire consistently while maintaining acceptable accuracy. I can come close with a 1911, and maybe I'm lazy but, 9mm is just that much easier to control and easy is worth considering if you are fighting for your life.
