Mostly you hear the police saying not to get involved and to instead observe. Public participation is not encouraged by the authorities. The only plus side is the video content does enable capture and prosecution.

In China I once helped a woman who was being strangled on a public bus. No one did a thing so I did what I thought was necessary. I was thrown off the bus afterward.

In my state of Fla its encouraged through many laws to get involved, even encourages shooting if that's what it takes. I love Florida. He could have legally shot all three of them dead, oso could have one of the bystanders, all legal. I must say he or one of the others should have taken more action.

I think you're referring to good samaritan laws. I'm not sure if there are any that require you to step up and help, but I know for a fact there are those that, once you do start to help, you must continue until you physical are unable to or are relieved.

Shoot, any Marine, serving or veteran, will usually step up like that. Last semester, I was walking off campus, and two guys were messing with one of the gay boys in my class. Now mind you, I don't much care for gay anything around me, BUT, I LOVE bullies! I just stepped up my pace a little, put my mouthpiece in, and as I approached, reached back to Florida and WHAM!! Dude flew back, and when I looked at the other guy, they were done. I looked at the kid, and told him. These fuckers bother you again, come find me. They left him, and everyone else for that matter alone after that. Saw a kid on campus a few days later with a really big puffy bruise on his face...wonder who done it. No one ever brought it up. I did let a few people know on the down low that if they were being bullied, I could 'assist'. Marines LOVE a good bit of fisticuffs!

By all means, video, but can you make sure someone called the cops and that someone else is helping to STOP the guy from being beaten to death before you get your all-important youtube footage?

30 years ago, I would have probably helped beat the kid up, or did it on my own. These days, being right in the middle of a 66% civilian school population filled with all the nuts, flakes, fruits, and veggies a guy can handle, I like to think I have grown up a bit. Someone called me Batman, another a Boondock Saint, and another, just 'that guy who kicked those dudes asses'(I hit one guy, one time). I grew up, as my Pop loves to say, standing up for those who need someone to stand up for them. I like to think it's just a good excuse to hit someone once in a while.
If I see someone who needs a little assistance, I am the last guy to grab a phone. I try to help out how I can. If that means hitting someone who deserves it, so be it. I am still a Neanderthal at heart

Oh, gotcha. Totally missed the selfless, heroic nature of the videographer. Kind of like the camera man at Iwo Jima, catching the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi?

I jest of course. The people standing there video taping the event are largely scumbags. So much so that so statistically insignificant a number of them, who may have covered all the other bases before deciding to video the criminal act, is so small that they do not mind being inadvertently lumped in with the scumbags!
