Rifle Scopes One Cold Premier - How it tracks...

There has been plenty of talk recently ABOUT these scopes, I thought I would add some personal information and use data.

This scope has seen approximately 2000 rounds under it since I purchased it. The scope and rifle are used, all the damn time.

This was yesterday morning...I left it out on the deck for 4 hours prior to this picture, then I shot it and left it outside while I warmed up and gathered more ammo....

My goal after reading the most recent comments was to determine if my scope was tracking correctly and if it was repeatable. Since mine sees plenty of cold weather use, I found this appropriate, plus I wanted to shoot and it was Cold!

I built a grid on cardboard and set it at 100 meters. The range was determined by a laser, I wasn't going to mess with the steel tape yesterday. The grid was marked at:
0
3 mil up with 2 mils wind either side
5 mil up
7 mil up with 5 mils wind either side
10 mil up
12 mil up with 3 mil wind either side

I also set a large 3" shoot n see zeroing target with a mark at 1 mil RT and 2 mil RT. These were to check for a change in impact due to a change in power settings.

During the course of this "test", I shot 120 rounds comprising 3 different loads.

I had been at a bit of a loss until I read this thread and Lindy's comments stating 1 to 2% is acceptable, so long as it is consistent. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1629441&gonew=1#UNREAD

My results:
Shooting was at 100m. Measurements were in cm.
First the impacts at different power settings....
Fired at 8, 14, and 25. NO CHANGE in elevation as I dialed the windage 1 mil and fired 3 shots per power setting. I then shot a single group consisting of 2 shots per power setting for 6 shots that measured less then .5 inches.

Dialing Elevation and Windage...

zeroed at 100m

dial up 3 mils: shots at correct elevation
dial up 3 mils and 2 mils wind, both left and right: Correct
dial up 5 mils: shots .05 mils low.
dial up 7 mils: shots .07 mils low.
dial up 7 mils and 5 mils wind both left and right. Both sides were .15 mils "short" of the full windage value dialed.
dial up 10 mils: shots .1 mils low
dial up 12 mils: shots .3 mils low
dial up 12 mils and 3 mils wind both left and right. Both sides were .1 mil "short" of full windage value dialed.

If I look at the numbers as percentages, through 10 mils the scope tracks 1% low. The 12 mil is 3% low.
The rifle has a zero base and a total of 14.5 mils up from zero.

Given the results, I am very please with the performance. It was time well spent and gave me the feedback I needed to be confident in my equipment.
I hope this provides others some useful info.

Re: One Cold Premier

I'm sure that someone will come along soon and try to piss on your test, the results, the scope, your conclusions, or something.

Me, I thank you for posting REAL data obtained through a systematic and reliable-appearing methodology.

Repeat it at 80F and we can then see whether thermal expansion ratios of the parts played a role here...

Pics?

Some people (I use the term generically here) won't believe you without pics. I do. I just like pics.

That was my first thought as well. I wondered if it will track perfectly when its warm? Slide one of your windows open and shoot in comfort. Thats what I do when my windows aren't froze shut.

Hopefully you are not into holding your breath. I don't have a dog in the fight, just sayin'...

From Jaeger308..

Getting to burn power is always a good thing!

I agree and it is the primary reason for the "test".

Thanks for the positive comments everyone.
I will indeed repeat the process as soon as it warms up. I would enjoy a few days in the 40's or 50's, but it will be a muddy mess around here when it does get warm again.
I have to admit, by the time I was done, it was about 10F. The saving grace for the shooter was the calm to 3mph wind. Humidity was about 75% and station pressure around 27.50...

The white tape is for coyote hunting. There is some on the barrel, and the inside the objective cover of butler creek. Basically anywhere to break up the outline.

Some people have a right to argue due to people that have never put their scope thru such test but yet still claim this and claim that. I can assure you that I did NOT have same results that MTETM had. I can also assure you that during shot show when I took a group of SOTIC instructors to the range that my PR (which was second one on it so nobody can say I didn't give it fair chance) was talked about (And not politely btw).

As I told MTETM yesterday via PM that I am glad he got results he did!! I am truly hoping more and more people do get the same as he did.

Thanks

OK so here goes the information and what took place with my 2 scopes in detail.

Scope 1--Went out to range for cold weather shooting..the high got to 10F when we were leaving. I adjusted the windage knob in .5mil increments for 6mils EACH way and POI remained the same. Elevation knob worked with no issues. The scope had performed flawlessly up until that day with those environmental conditions.
Chris at PR sent out new scope the very next day via next day delivery even before having the "down" one back yet.

Scope 2--Went out to range during shot show with SOTIC instructors. It was snowing, foggy haze with snow on mountains while we were shooting at 500m metal silhouettes. That was first time I had used the scope in all those conditions combined. Neither myself or anyone else there for that matter were thrilled with the clarity of the scope during those conditions. Enough said on that scope due to it was personal opinions and should be taken as just that (opinion) not meant as slam to PR.

I don't know whether that should make me laugh with you, or cry for you!

It's approaching 60 outside right now...and we get at least one snowfall at this altitude most years.

Re: One Cold Premier

-6F is warm weather shooting

Test it is 80? I would rather shoot in the cold than the heat. You have to experience the clean heavy air when its cold in Alaska.

Nothing tests kit like the cold! Around zero things happen, -20 is different and once you get to -40 its a whole different set of happenings. Nothing from any piece of kit will surprise me when its cold.

Good report though!

We tried to give PR some on camera time on a few of our weapons but when working on it things just fell apart when people started having cold weather issues.

While I am not sure if this played a roll in why we were not give the opportunity it sure was strange timing. For reference USO, Nightforce, March and S&B all were very excited to get some solid on camera usage on multiple calibers but for some reason Premier passed on the opportunity.

I will let all of you be the judge.

Re: One Cold Premier

There should be some kind of online poll!

That's the answer. Video only works for the teevee people.

Vote twice and get some kind of free pouch (coyote brown!)

I suffered through the Unertl era, and no one wants a 25 year scope. Let's rotate every year based upon the internet!

Internet. Hell yeah!

Who the hell are you?

Kidding.

I have not had the opportunity to run mine at neg 40, but it tracked flawlessly at 8 degrees. I will repeat tests in 40+/- weather in a few weeks, and then 90+/- this summer.

That's Funny Mastersgt!!! We tried that and they chose not to oblige.
