One piece base choices (HELP)

Re: One piece base choices (HELP)

To me, it really depended on my budget. I went with the weaver 20moa base on my build and works just fine for what I need. Buy what you want/afford. Just my $.02

For the money EGW's HD line is the best ive found and I sell/install alot of bases. Your paying for material and coating or metal treatment. Hard anodizing vs standard anodizing for example or 6061 alum. which is pretty much the do-all or 7075 alloy thats used alot in high grade/high wear aircraft parts.

Re: One piece base choices (HELP)

It seems to me that the base has a critical role in your performance, making the connection between rifle and optic. While this may be a simple role, it is still important. I went with inexpensive bases when I started shooting because spending $50-75 on a base for a $500-600 rifle seemed appropriate. As I moved into more expensive rifles and scopes, spending $125 to $200 seemed justified (rifle and scopes were costing 3x or 4x, yet the base was 2x or 3x). You can tell the difference between a $50 and $150 base. The machining is finer, materials are usually higher quality, and the finish is better. So, I usually recommend EGW for use on a nice Savage or Remington. If you are going custom, I would suggest something more expensive.

Just depends on the budget of the whole package too, if you're building a $3k+ rifle then who cares about another $50. If a stock Rem 700 then sure on the Weaver.

What he said. The EGW HD bases have never let me down. TPS on the other hand... Move on. What Sigkev said is entirely appropriate. Just make sure everything fits within spec.

Re: One piece base choices (HELP)

egw bases are quite cheap on amazon. just ordered some on there as i had some other things to buy from amazon.
I originally f'ed up and bought a weaver tactical one piece picatinny style base... this was not a picatinny base, it was weaver so it wouldnt fit the rings (I have a cheaper vortex and the same rings as triman2008). This is my first rifle ever so its a learning curve, previously the army gave me everything i needed for shooting.
EGW customer support is great and everything seems very well made. they use very high grade steel in my experience of their 1911 parts.

Re: One piece base choices (HELP)

As with all metal products with the more expensive bases your paying for tooling and quality control. I have a friend that owns a weapons manufacturing plant. He has made custom parts for a lot of my friends. He always says tooling is everything. Not every CNC machine is the same or setup with the same specs and precision. I'd rather mount my 1250+ dollar optics in quality parts.
