I guess my search fu is not so good. I didn't find anything, even though I know there have been some posts about this.

Would some of you fine, smart, kind persons give me some guidance on the best procedure for milling out the opening? I would hate to make several cuts and find out the opening is still too large, no matter how many cuts I take.

Open up towards the muzzle. Don't go deeper into the stock. If the lug is too tall, mill the bottom of the lug shorter.

Measure the lug thickness and simply open up the slot to fit the lug. You don't want a tight fit, you want a little light in front of the lug.

A couple of lessons learned......

If you end up using a long mill, do not zero the z axis until you have finished the y cuts. A long mill will deflect due to side pressure on the tool and ding the bottom of the mortise.

You do not need to take as much off the bottom of the recoil lug as the calipers soul lead you to believe.
